Shared Innovation Program investigating the potential of an integrated system approach for offshore energy.

Over ons

The North Sea Energy (NSE) program aims to develop new concepts for offshore system integration on the North Sea. As a pre-competitive Shared Innovation Program, NSE identifies and assesses opportunities for synergies between multiple low-carbon energy developments offshore: offshore wind, solar & marine energy, hydrogen developments, carbon capture transport & storage, and the phasing out of natural gas. offshore wind, solar & marine energy, carbon capture & storage, natural gas and hydrogen developments while strengthening the carrying capacity of our economy, society and nature and identify human capital aspects. In 2023-2025 NSE investigates development strategies towards 2050 for three conceptual offshore energy areas in the North Sea, that are central elements in the program. With almost 40 public and private organisations and international partners from the energy value chain, NSE differentiates itself through the participatory process, knowledge sharing and knowledge brokerage. The North Sea Energy program, founded in 2017, is an innovation project within the TKI New Gas program line Geo-Energy.

Recently Subsea7 joined the NSE programme. We interviewed Stian Sande, Strategy Director Energy Transition to get to know this new partner. "Stian, who is Subsea7 and what do you do?"   "Subsea7 is a global leader in the delivery of offshore projects and services for the energy industry. We are making the offshore energy transition possible through the continuous evolution of lower-carbon oil and gas and by enabling the growth of renewables and emerging energy.   We provide project management, engineering, procurement, construction and installation expertise across the full energy lifecycle. Our focus is very much at a system level, and we enable the design and construction of complex subsea systems through the application of our own, our key suppliers’ and our partners’, technology and equipment.  Our services are delivered to clients across the energy landscape, covering oil and gas, carbon capture and storage (CCS), offshore wind (fixed and floating) and emerging energies such as offshore hydrogen and energy storage."   "What is Subsea7 doing in the energy transition? What is your role in offshore systems integration?"   "Our role is to support our clients to deliver the offshore energy solutions the world needs for today and tomorrow. By developing technology and providing services for offshore wind, CCS, green hydrogen, and energy storage.   Seaway7, part of the Subsea7 Group, has installed over 1,100 wind turbine generator foundations, 35 substations and over 2,600km of power cables in Europe, Asia and the USA. In addition to technology and services for fixed wind developments, the company has invested in floating wind technology and continue to develop cost-effective innovative solutions to make offshore floating wind possible.   In 2021, Equinor awarded Subsea7 a contract to participate in the development of Northern Lights, a Joint Venture between Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies, which studied pipeline transportation and permanent storage of CO2 in a subsea North Sea reservoir. During this project, we laid a pipeline to store 1.5mt of CO2 per year for the first phase development. We are also involved in several CCS related Joint Industry Projects led by DNV. Additionally, we are working on projects to better understand CO2 supercritical flows and steel aging under related physico-chemical conditions.   We have also developed an innovative ecosystem of offshore hydrogen capabilities and technologies, and an active member of several industry forums and technology joint initiatives, notably with AquaVentus. We have conducted several studies for major industrial players and key suppliers and gained valuable expertise on offshore hydrogen production architectures and integrated offshore wind. We see the combination of the key building blocks of offshore wind, offshore hydrogen, energy storage, CCS, and..." Want to read the full interview? 👉 https://lnkd.in/ePAFk44V

🌊 Thematic Sounding Board meeting on Ecology 🌊   At the North Sea Energy programme, collaboration and diverse perspectives are essential for driving innovation and developing sustainable solutions. Our Sounding Board plays a crucial role in this mission, providing independent reflections and valuable insights that help shape our research.   On June 18, 2024, we held a thematic Sounding Board session focused on Ecology. This session brought together members of the Sounding Board and lead researchers from the program in Utrecht at TNO.   The discussions were rich and insightful, highlighting the importance of nature-inclusive design. We explored the ecological impacts of energy hubs, including effects on benthic species and birds, and the necessity of maintaining open spaces for species like the guillemots. The session also emphasized the need for early monitoring and research to inform policy processes and ensure sustainable development.   We are grateful for the active participation and valuable contributions from all attendees. Their expertise and commitment are vital as we continue to refine our research and develop innovative solutions for the North Sea's energy transition.   Looking ahead, we are excited to further our research in the upcoming months and share more detailed results in the fall. We also look forward to our next thematic Sounding Board session on Human Capital scheduled for November 13, 2024.   Thank you for your dedication and support!   #NorthSeaEnergy #SustainableEnergy #Ecology #Innovation #Collaboration #EnergyTransition Anne-Mette Jørgensen Joris Koornneef Madelaine Halter Remco Groenenberg Rene Peters Ivo de Klerk Luuk van der Heijden

Dutch Climate and Energy Minister Rob Jetten has detailed the government’s upcoming significant developments in the North Sea Energy Infrastructure Plan 2050 in a recent Parliamentary letter. The plan aims to expand wind energy capacity to 35 GW by 2035, 50 GW by 2040, and 70 GW by 2050, which is crucial for the Netherlands' energy transition and independence. A particular focus for NSE is on the energy hub section of the letter. A plan is in place to implement a hub-based rollout for offshore wind, with the first large-scale hub potentially in wind area 6/7. This hub will include wind parks, electricity, and hydrogen production, offering an integrated solution for energy transport and conversion in connection to neighbouring countries. According to the letter, there is a slight preference for platform-based deployment versus artificial islands or hybrid solutions, due to the challenges of constructing artificial islands in waters over 40 meters deep. Immediate infrastructure planning is fundamental if these goals wish to be met. Already, the supply chain for offshore wind energy infrastructure faces challenges in capacity, potentially causing a delay of the 2035 target. Hydrogen production demonstration projects are also underway to address the challenges the production poses, these developments are pivotal. Offshore wind energy needs to create a steady rollout to create electricity. To achieve this, plans are in place for the production of 2 GW per year starting in 2033. An increase is, however, necessary to meet the later targets. The goal is to maintain momentum and ensure sufficient electricity supply. New pipelines as well as the reuse of existing ones are being explored by the government for the transport of offshore hydrogen. Gasunie is responsible for the management of this network, ensuring public interest and integration with existing infrastructure. Investigations are underway to expand the number of routes for bringing electricity from wind farms to land. This includes exploring higher deployment rates of converter capacity and ensuring a broad range of options for transporting wind energy to shore. North Sea Energy wishes you a happy World Environment Day! Organized by the UN Environment Programme since 1973, the event takes place with a specific theme each year on June 5th to generate awareness for the environment and how we can take care of it. This year’s theme is land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. The North Sea Energy Programme has dedicated a work package to the environment, specifically WP4: ecology. It aims to research the potential impacts of the building of energy hubs in the North Sea, as well as the most nature-friendly ways in which these can be incorporated. Later this month, the NSE Sounding Board will come together for a meeting to discuss developments in the programme. Amongst others, this Board includes Government Organizations, NGOs and environmental organizations all of which can critique and offer input for us to include in the programme. The members can be found in the "About us" section on the NSE website. Join the NSE community on LinkedIn to stay up to date and to help the environment by supporting our research. #worldenvironmentday

Recently, WWF published the summary report of the event which took place in Brussels on the 23rd and 24th of January 2024, WWF’s event “Turbines and Tides: Expanding EU offshore wind in a nature-friendly way”. The report highlights the key takeaways and WWF policy recommendations: 1. Immediate stop of the subsidization of fossil fuels by the EU and its Member States. Instead, funding should go to nature-friendly renewable energy projects, such as offshore wind.  2. Energy consumption should be halved in the EU by 2040 and the energy system should 100% renewable at this point. This needs to be achieved in a well-planned, environmentally friendly manner. 3. The Maritime Spatial Planning Directive should be revised, so that both renewable energy and biodiversity targets can be met through an ecosystem-based approach.  4. Wind project tenders need non-price criteria and to be harmonized across the EU, under consideration of regional specificities. Overall, WWF offered a wide variety of insight into how the energy transition can take place whilst taking the well-being of the ecosystem into account. On behalf of NSE, Ivo Wakounig and Jylles van der Vliet were present at the event to raise awareness on the NSE programme amongst our international stakeholders and to hear about the latest blue energy policy developments in Europe.
