US-based fashion company Unspun developed technology to create 3D woven garments on demand. Called Vega, the 3D weaving technology is Unspun’s answer to fast fashion. Normally, fashion brands have to guess what customers in the future might want to buy. They have to order the garments, often overseas, which are commonly created by cutting and sewing fabric together, leaving a lot of waste. Once the clothes arrive in the store, it is uncertain they are still in demand and will be sold. They may end up discounted or even thrown away. With Unspun’s technology, the production time is accelerated from months to days. .Cadillac’s new concept vehicle SOLLEI includes mycelium leather in its interior. The material in question is MycoWork’s Fine Mycelium. The material is made of mycelium, the root system of mushrooms, which is grown in such a way that it functions as a leather alternative. The process uses ingredients made from biobased substances, such as wheat bran, water, and repurposed sawdust. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) completed the 3D printing of a 100 m2 low carbon emissions building prototype using local soil and natural materials. Called the 3D-Printed Earth Forest Campus, the project functions as a sort of live laboratory for the testing of new constructive and architectural solutions. It is constructed for the most part of natural materials. The floor plan is fragmented and deconstructed to show the potential flexibility in architectural design provided by the digital technology of 3D printing. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University developed a way to create solid objects made of yarn through the power of knitting. The technique was first envisioned by Yuichi Hirose, a PhD student at Carnegie Mellon University. Called solid knitting, the process is similar to 3D printing. Like a 3D printer shapes objects by adding layer by layer of material, solid knitting builds objects by adding knitted layers. The main advantage of using knitting, however, is that the layers are only tied together, not fused.
