Enabling as many people as possible to benefit from increasing prosperity, whilst minimising the negative consequences.
Over ons
The Erasmus Initiative ‘Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity’ focuses on enabling as many people as possible to benefit from increasing prosperity, whilst minimising the negative consequences. Increased prosperity requires constant coordination of the changing needs and values of governments, businesses, citizens and entrepreneurs. In order to chart this dynamic field, scholars from Erasmus School of Law, Rotterdam School of Management and the Erasmus School of Philosophy are entering into a multidisciplinary partnership.

Over the past couple of weeks two major elections have taken place in Europe, but the results of the latest football match for the UEFA European Championship are of higher importance. Athletes these days enjoy more respect than politicians, whose debates in parliament have also become more uncivil and sensationalist. Looking at this development Martin de Jong was reminded of the transition of the ancient Roman Republic into the autocratic Empire with the erosion of legal and moral norms as the root of this evolution. So, are we witnessing the rise of a new generation of Neros? Read his latest blogpost on our website: https://lnkd.in/e7JBPqAr

"Recognizing and acknowledging environmental crime as crime, not just as carelessness or accidents, is crucial." Recently Lieselot Bisschop offered an answer to the question of what is environmental crime to Fonds Slachtofferhulp based on her expertise as criminologist and her research into PFAS pollution in the Netherlands. In this interview (in Dutch) she outlines the what, who, and how of environmental crime, as well as how the government can take the lead in this issue. https://lnkd.in/e-bJGvfb

“Frontiers in pluralist economics: Exploring the potential of alternative economic views for inclusive prosperity” - an afternoon organized in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Climate Economics for Nature and Society - ICENS lab. Four speakers, drawing on different schools of economic thought put forward the case of why there is a dire need for economic thinking that departs from the usual standard economics approach dominating discourses and research, if we are to significantly progress in having our economies work better for society and nature. Michael Roos presented the suitability of complexity economics; Brian Fath discussed the role of ecological economics; Katy Gillespie put forward the case of feminist economics; whilst Şerban Scrieciu argued for allowing for a greater diversity in economic thinking in education, research, policy and practice. Thank you also to Filippos Zisopoulos for guiding us through the day and to Martin de Jong for kickstarting the event. https://lnkd.in/eqRKw7cY

Bridging the digital divide - a research project in collaboration with Gemeente Helmond In our newest blogpost Negar Noori presents the results of her research on how to ensure that everyone is included in the process of making Helmond an inclusive digital city. In her collaborative approach, that not only included the municipality, but also the citizens of Helmond, she succeeded in reaching a consensus that made sure that everyone would be included in the transition towards an inclusive digital city. Embracing a multitude of narratives can spark hopeful, ambitious, and effective actions towards creating economies which foster inclusive prosperity while regenerating nature. But how much room is there for alternative economic views in curricula today? What insights can these alternative views offer? How do they differ and how do they overlap? If you are interested in such questions then we invite you to participate in our upcoming event "Frontiers in Pluralist Economics" on June 10th at Erasmus University Rotterdam. During this event, our guest speakers Brian Fath, Michael Roos, Katy Gillespie, and Şerban Scrieciu will introduce us to alternative economic theories, and how those can play a pivotal role in addressing the complex challenges of the Anthropocene era. The event is organized by the Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Climate Economics for Nature and Society - ICENS lab. As part of his project on the role of the installer in the energy transition our postdoctoral researcher Erwin van Tuijl is currently in Gothenburg, Sweden, to visit our partners there and to learn more about training opportunities for installers in Sweden. Gothenburg and Rotterdam are both considered to be post-industrial cities with a lot of similarities, but also a lot of differences. We are looking forward to hearing from Erwin how installers can contribute to the energy transition within these two different frameworks.
Postdoctoral Researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam & International Centre for Frugal Innovation (ICFI)
Last week, I visited Heta Utbildningar, a training centre for heating installers in the city of Härnösand in mid-Sweden for our research project “the installer in the post-industrial city”. What differentiates this training centre from other vocational and professional training schools in Sweden is that it is (still) the only examination/certification centre for heat pump installers. I would like to thank Bengt Sandström who provided me a tour through the centre, followed by an inspiring discussion on the role of heating installers in energy transitions. Among the topics we discussed are: - Interactions between installers and heat pump manufacturers and wholesalers - How smart heating products and systems affect installers working practices, and the implications for energy transitions - The (slow) transformation of educational and certification systems Key take away is the need to (re)train installers not only to understand heat pump technology, but also its functioning in the heating system and its place in the building shell. With this extended knowledge, heat pump installers do not only sell a technology providing heat and warm water, but they can also also provide the right advise on how to improve energy efficiency.

The concept of inclusive prosperity is undoubtedly of high importance academically and policy-wise, but content-wise it still leaves many open questions. Which is why Erasmus University Rotterdam has fully committed to examining inclusive prosperity as a leading knowledge provider in Europe. In this latest blogpost Martin de Jong lies out the plans for an upcoming Institute for Inclusive Prosperity, and how Erasmus University will contribute to this important topic. https://lnkd.in/eB-5QXMe
