Over ons

Damen Naval is the dedicated naval shipbuilding division of the Damen Shipyards Group, which brings together all the naval activities of the group, both in the Netherlands and abroad. With roots stretching back almost 150 years – to the Royal Schelde yard in Vlissingen – Damen Naval is the only naval original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in the Netherlands. Having delivered more than 400 vessels to customers all around the world, we are a trusted partner in the international marketplace, known for our role as full-service provider, or integrator, throughout the lifecycle of our products. The creation of Damen Naval follows a series of impressive accomplishments on the international market, among which are our selection for the design and build of the German Navy’s F126 frigates and the delivery of the 10th SIGMA combatant to the export market. Moreover, we are proud of our long tradition of serving the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN), the launching customer of eight successive generations of Damen Combatants. This relationship continues today with the contract to build the RNLN’s new Combat Support Ship and the new Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigates (ASWF) for both the Netherlands and Belgium, and our preselection as one of the parties – along with partner SAAB – for the Walrus Class Submarine Replacement Programme. Damen Naval is one of the cornerstones of the Netherlands’ naval triple helix. This unique way of working together with government, knowledge centres, and industry shapes the landscape in which innovative and distinctive ship classes are created. The high quality of these vessels is evidenced by their long lifespan and the fact that many of them go on to have a second life with navies around the world. We remain committed to helping protect the security interests of our customers at sea and support the development of a sustainable shipbuilding industry in the client country.

Happy birthday to submarine support ship HNLMS Mercuur which was commissioned 37 years ago this month. This is the only surface vessel attached to the Netherlands submarine service and has served proudly for all these years. HNLMS Mercuur recently participated in Baltic Operations 2024 (BALTOPS 24). The bottom photo shows her leaving the port of Stockholm. BALTOPS 24 was the premier maritime-focused exercise in the Baltic Regionled by U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa and executed by Naval Striking and Support Forces from many NATO countries including the Netherlands. On this #flashbackFriday, we travel back to 1875, the year our company was founded. We started as Koninklijke Maatschappij De Schelde and earned a reputation of building state-of-the-art ships, both commercial and navy vessels. That reputation continues to this day, even though we now operate under the name Damen Naval. In the past century and a half, we have built more than 420 ships and there are more to come. Next year, we will be celebrating our 150th birthday and in the run-up, we are keen on hearing your memories of either “De Schelde’ or Damen Naval (or both of course!). What is your favourite story? And what is your favourite ship? #naval #shipbuilding #DamenNaval

Naval vessels from around the world are congregating in Hawaii this month for the annual Rim of the Pacific exercise. RIMPAC 2024, the 29th edition, is a special one for us, because there are three Damen Naval-built ships taking part. First up is HNLMS Tromp, the Air Defence and Command frigate for the Royal Netherlands Navy which was commissioned in 2003. She sails side by side with KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata of the Indonesian Navy (built in, for, and by Indonesia between 2014 and 2017) and Mexican SIGMA-frigate ARM Benito Juárez (built in, for, and by Mexico between 2017 and 2020). Approximately 29 nations, 40 surface ships, three submarines, 14 national land forces, over 150 aircraft and more than 25,000 personnel will train and operate in and around the Hawaiian Islands during the exercise, which runs until 1 August. This #frigateFriday is dedicated to KRI Diponegoro (365). This Indonesian Navy SIGMA 9113 was the first of four corvettes in the Diponegoro class, the very first class of SIGMA combatants we built for the Indonesian Navy. The Diponegoro was laid down on 24 March 2005 and commissioned in July 2007. She has superior propulsion and sea keeping capabilities which make the corvette perfectly suited for maritime search and patrol operations in the Indonesian territorial waters. However, the Diponegoro-class has participated in various international taskforces and exercises, such as the UNIFIL Maritime Task Force and the Rim of the Pacific navy exercise in 2016. The bottom picture shows KRI Diponegoro and Martadinata-class frigate KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai (332) transiting the Java Sea during Cooperation Afloat and Readiness and Training (CARAT) in Indonesia 2021. #SIGMA #shipbuilding #naval #DamenNaval

𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐡𝐦+𝐕𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝟏𝟐𝟔 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬   We have reached another milestone on the F126 frigate project for the German Navy. At the end of June, we signed the contract with the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) for the order of two further F126 multi-purpose frigates. And now, we have signed the receipt of the confirmation for the two additional ships with our Hamburg-based partner Blohm+Voss. The shipyard will be responsible for the construction and outfitting of the ships.    The continued cooperation with Blohm+Voss B.V. & Co. KG emphasises the fact that the F126 frigates will be built entirely in Germany and by German shipyards. Suppliers throughout Germany will also benefit from the order.    Two additional F126 frigates will expand and modernise the surface fleet of the Navy Command of the German Navy | Marinekommando Deutsche Marine The highly complex project maintains and strengthens the key technology of naval surface shipbuilding in Germany and expands it further. In addition, two more ships of the same class mean many practical benefits. For example, in terms of costs, training, equipment, crew and maintenance.    Pictured: F126 Project Managers Sofie Bernaert (Damen Naval) and Sascha Eilers (Blohm+Voss). #DamenNaval #F126 #shipbuilding #naval

On this #flashbackFriday we look back to 25 June 2002, and the keel laying ceremony for hydrographic survey vessel HNLMS Snellius. The 75-metre Royal Netherlands Navy vessel was commissioned 18 months later and to this day has a variety of tasks. Its main purpose is surveying the sea and mapping changes in the waterways and seabed, mainly in the North Sea and Caribbean parts of the Kingdom. However, the Snellius can also operate as a guard ship, represent the Netherlands at home and abroad, assist with maritime scientific surveys by the Ministry of Defence, and assist with rescue operations. The multipurpose vessel was built at our shipyards in Vlissingen and Romania, just like her sister ship, HNLMS Luymes. Cool detail: Snellius is the third hydrographic vessel to be named after the Dutch mathematician Willebrord Snellius who contributed significantly to hydrography. #Naval #DamenNaval #shipbuilding

The German Navy will receive its urgently needed extra maritime power through an additional procurement of two F126 frigates. Last week, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag gave the green light for the procurement of a fifth and sixth vessel. Today, the Procurement Organisation of the German Armed Forces (BAAINBw) gave us at Damen Naval the official go-ahead to expand the original contract of four multipurpose frigates to six vessels. “This is good news, and we are honoured that our German client has the confidence in us and the F126 design to order two more ships,” says Damen Naval Managing Director Roland Briene. “With this decision, we will be able to expand the ‘Niedersachsen’ class to six ships. It is the quickest way to expand and modernise the surface fleet of the German Navy. This decision also benefits the German procurement organisation and the involved industry. Having more ships of the same class brings many advantages.” The first frigate is due to be delivered in 2028. Ship five and six will be delivered in 2033 and 2034 respectively. Construction of the two additional F126 frigates also takes place entirely in Germany. (Pictured) Damen Naval Managing Director Roland Briene and BAAINBw Director General Annette Lehnigk-Emden shake hands as the F126 project team looks on. Behind them from left: Niko Oertel (Damen Naval), Magiel Venema (Damen Naval), Kathrin Rohloff (Damen Naval), Rudolf Braun (BAAINBw), Frank Verhelst (Damen Naval), Andreas Czerwinski (BAAINBw), Claudia Baldus (BAAINBw), and Stefan Maier (BAAINBw). #F126 #shipbuilding #naval #DamenNaval
