🕊️ Successful completion of the first edition of the 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 for alumni at Clingendael ⤵ The week was an opportunity to share training experiences and reflect among the community of Clingendael Training of Trainers alumni and trainers on how to continue to support capacity building of organisations. ⚖️ Ukrainian Rule of Law specialists briefed. Last week, Julia Westerveld-Soldatiuk, Max Eleveld and Wouter Zweers travelled to Kyiv, Ukraine. There, they briefed a core group of 30 Rule of Law specialists from the Ukrainian civil service, with up to 100 others joining them online. 'This Clingendael Academy training directly translated back to my workplace', says ABOI Paul Ngole. Aboi Paul Ngole took part in a 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 at the Clingendael Academy. He works for the 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗸𝗼 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 in Uganda. Much of his work revolves around peacebuilding. In this new Alert, katia golovko and Laurens W. reflect on the effects of Niger’s repeal of its anti-smuggling law. ⚖ 🌍 A year ago, Niger's new military authorities, who took power after a coup d’état, repealed this anti-smuggling law. The abrogation was reportedly requested by community representatives from the Agadez region. The law was initially adopted in response to a deadly 2013 desert incident where 92 people died, provoking a strong reaction in Nigerien society and highlighting the need to counter irregular migration and protect desert-travelling migrants. However, many in Niger viewed the law as being imposed by EU pressure, as Europe sought to reduce the number of migrants entering Libya and Niger needed a legal framework to contribute to this goal. Therefore, from the outset, the implementation of the law faced strong criticism, especially in the Agadez region, where migration was a crucial economic activity. 🔵 What will be the legal implications of Niger's junta repealing the anti-smuggling law? ⤵ Read more: https://lnkd.in/eBFWgiU6
