We gladly endorse the #MICCAI2024 Open Data initiative to promote and empower researchers in sharing of medical imaging data. Only together can we move research forward, so we invite you to join the initiative!
Have you already checked out the first ever Open Data initiative at #MICCAI2024? Our goal is to promote and facilitate sharing medical imaging data, especially that of underrepresented populations and diseases with MICCAI's first edition in Africa. To this end, we have established the AFRICAI repository for medical imaging: https://lnkd.in/ezNHUby6. Submit your papers now to our track before the 1st of July! Accepted papers will be published in a #MELBA special issue, with selected authors being invite to present live at the Open Data session at #MICCAI2024! We are also actively looking for reviewers: if you want to volunteer, please send me a PM! Spread the word, SHARE DATA, and join us at the Open Data MICCAI session on the 7th of October in Marrakesh! Only two weeks left! On the 2nd of July I will defend my PhD thesis entiteld: 'Modeling Human Embryonic Brain Development'. In the past five years, I worked on various AI-algorithms to perform automated assessment of the growth and development of human embryonic brain in first-trimester ultrasonography! For example, by automatically measuring the embryonic volume. Using AI, measurement time can be drastically reduced, which will enable implementation in clinical practice. 👩🎓 Defense: Tuesday 2nd of July, 15:30h at the Erasmus MC, or from your own couch via: https://lnkd.in/epH97HgS 📖 Want to read my thesis digitally or physically? Our group co-organised a very successful symposium on the implications of the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) for AI and Medical Imaging research, see below!
🚀 Exciting Symposium Highlights for PhD Students in Medical Research! Our team attended an insightful symposium at EMC hosted by ICAI STROKE lab and the Image Office on June 4th. The event focused on what researchers developing software should know about Medical Device Regulation (MDR). Here are some key takeaways, especially for PhD students working in the medical field and aiming to translate their research into clinical use. 📋 Key Insights: - Think about intended use, requirements, and risks in the early phases of your research. - The in-house development process includes: market scan and justification, design, development & prototype production, verification & validation, dossier evaluation, and risk management. - MDR certification is a long process, and it does not stop after initial certification. - If it’s not documented, it doesn’t exist. Documentation is crucial! 💡 Good Coding Practices for Researchers: - Document your code - Don’t Repeat Yourself (DRY) - Do One Thing - Use version control with Git A big thank you to Ilva van Houwelingen for summarizing these invaluable points! Let's leverage these insights to advance our research and its clinical applications. 💪 #MedicalResearch #PhDLife #SoftwareDevelopment #ClinicalTranslation #GoodCodingPractices

I am thrilled to announce that another article is published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research: "Talus-derived Reference Coordinate System for 3D Calcaneal Assessment: A Novel Approach to Improve Morphological Measurements." 3D Models obtained from preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative imaging, particularly computer tomography (CT), are vital in planning and evaluating surgical procedures. A consistent and well-defined reference coordinate system is crucial for accurate measurements, interpretation, and comparison of pre- and postoperative outcomes. However, defining a reliable coordinate system based solely on fractured or surgically reconstructed calcanei presents significant challenges. For this reason, we explores the feasibility of talus-derived coordinate systems for 3D-models of the calcaneus across its various conditions. With this study we showed that all our methods were feasible for creating a reference coordinate system of the calcaneus based on the talus. A huge thank you to all my co-authors for their hard work and dedication. Michiel Verhofstad Jacob J. Visser Mark Van Vledder Theo van Walsum Link to the publication: https://lnkd.in/ehaJyH7f

👨🔬 Meet Our Team Member! 🌟 Hello LinkedIn community! We are excited to introduce Gonzalo, one of the members of our TAI-MRI lab! 🎉 He’s working on the project of trustworthy AI for brain tumor diagnosis. 🔍 Background: Gonzalo obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering at University of the Andes (Colombia). Afterwards, he completed a joint Master’s Degree in Medical Imaging and Applications at the University of Girona (Spain), University of Burgundy (France), and University of Cassino and Southern Lazio (Italy). He is passionate about using AI to help solve current challenges in the medical field. 📚 Research Focus: In current clinical practice, MRI is generally used to spot the presence of brain tumors, but their status is assessed through tissue-based analysis, for which an invasive biopsy procedure must be performed. The aim of this project is to develop AI methods that can provide trustworthy diagnosis of brain tumors using non-invasive imaging (MRI). This could potentially avoid biopsy in some cases, and better guide treatment procedures in general. The developed methods will incorporate explainable AI techniques, aiming to improve the interpretability of the generated results in clinical settings. 🌐 Connect with Gonzalo: Feel free to connect and explore potential collaborations or to simply say hello! Gonzalo Esteban Mosquera Rojas 🚀 Let's build connections, share knowledge, and develop advancements in Trustworthy AI for MRI. #Research #AI #MRI
