My UI/UX Journey (what I've learnt in 3 months) Learning UI/UX this year came with a lot of puzzle and excitement for me... I asked myself so many questions and still do. So far its been productive and I want to share with you (3) major principles I hold dear in my heart. I'll list them out and break them down bit by bit: 1.) Color 2.) Hierarchy 3.) Consistency Color Color is the basis of every design. There is no design that doesn't have a color template to it. The principles and concept of color are so important they decide the aesthetics of your design. Hierarchy In UI/UX, hierarchy is very important. It helps to show the users what to see first, what is important and the right action to take. Consistency Consistency is one thing you don't want to joke with while designing. It gives your screens a natural flow that helps users to navigate and interact with the interface of a particular app or website. Everyone deserves a chance!!💫💫 Was thinking back on my journey as a designer recently and I couldn’t help but thank God for growth amidst the seeming setbacks and disappointments I had faced. One of such experiences as a junior designer was how clueless I was as to navigating the new world I was thrust into and needed someone to hold my hands. The power of mentorships🙌🙌🙌 Let me share an experience with you,stay with me it’s worth your read👍🏻 ✨Fresh out of two design bootcamps ,one of the design bootcamps had organized a paid mentorship program to help those interested in paying have someone hold their hands and help them along the design journey. ✨To say I was thrilled was an understatement to the excitement I had and of course I quickly made the payment,though at that time it was a lot to me but oh well,they say you use money to make money so ,I thought it was a win -win situation. ✨I’d met my mentor ,we’d had a couple of sessions and somehow I had landed a job and everything was going smoothly. Imagine my greatest surprise when my mum had an accident and broke her leg🥲🥲🥲 ✨This would mark the beginning of my continuous stay in the hospital for the next 1 year being her full time caregiver ✨This would further make me not meet up with the tasks given to me by my mentor on time and further creating a gap between us. ✨I would later reach out but had lost my chance of being mentored by my mentor and that really made me down at that time as I had hoped this mentorship would help improve my skills and also further boost my network 💯 ✨What I didn’t know was though I lost that opportunity, where I was going to work,I would have a senior designer who was going to serve as a mentor to us junior Designers. I also didn’t know I would later find a platform that would lead me to a mentor who was more than willing to help with whatever questions I might have till date💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻. Fascinating how life takes its turns right😄 ✨What I want you to take from this story: ✅Extend grace to people- honestly people are going through a lot and you never know when your slight kindness will be appreciated. ✅Always communicate your situations well . I probably did not explain well the depth of what was going on with me that closed the door of the opportunity with that mentor and made the person believe I was unserious. ✅As a junior designer, at the end of the day,nobody has the power or control over how far you go. Good day fams 💎 Yesterday I was privilege to attend a Google meet with UX Foundry along with our honourable guest of the day Okoro Lynda Chibugo Where she went in-depth into the concept of User journey 🤗 Do you know that the User journey doesn't only start when users consume the digital product... But starts right from the moment of awareness 😮 Just in case you ain't familiar with the concept of user journey... In one word User Journey demonstrate explicitly the concept of User Experience. And when it is relating to real life, it can be termed My life journey... that's right, My journey on how I ventured into UIUX design is an experience and it started from my awareness about a tech career called UIUX Design 🤗 User Journey is not just concerned about how user go about the usage of the product, it all start from how they came across the product (Awareness) The thought of whether or not to use the product? How can the product solve the challenges or problem faced by the user?🤔 (Consideration) Then the choice to use the product and give it a shot is the Decisions Phase users experience 😌 After coming to a concession to try out the product, users take action to buy the product, install the app or patronize the website 🤩 Then the User flow comes in... I know a lot of us tend to mix the User journey and User flow together 🙂. They are 2 different concept 😌 The user flow is the complete step users take to complete a task or achieve their goal on the User Interface 👌 Now your question maybe... Just how do the user flow come into the user journey 😌 Here's the answer... The next phase users experience after taking the action to utilize the digital product is whether or not to remain loyal with the app or website 🤗 Only with a good and efficient user flow can users achieve their goal and satisfy their needs. And the efficient and smooth satisfaction of their needs determine the Users Retention 🔥 This follows the last but no the least phase of User Journey... Which is Advocacy 💎... Let's view the advocacy as users positive free word of mouth 🔥 about the digital product or a physical product Users support what satisfies them ✔️ They invite family and friends to also make use of the product... Last week, I visited the Bank to open an account. A member of the staff inquired about my profession. Smiling, I responded, I'm a UI/UX Designer. The confusion on their face prompted further explanation. 🤔 I clarified, Think of me as the one who designs the interface of websites and apps to make them not only user-friendly but also enjoyable to use. Consistency is key! My tech-savvy friend got in touch with me to discuss working together on the design he has been working on. I'm a front-end developer; he's a UIUX designer Kehinde Faaruq Azeez. He then asked if I would be interested in working in his figma on the e-commerce design that he had recently finished. I informed him I would be willing to work on it after noticing the lovely design. As I worked on the design, I realized how much my proficiency has improved with consistency and time. Looking back, I can recall how difficult it was for me to understand some concepts, but today I understand: how to utilize useState hooks and when to use React useContext for global state management. How to apply condition statements, such as the ternary operator. when to utilize the filter, map, and reduce methods to an array. I effectively utilized ReactJS to build reusable UI components, TypeScript to ensure type safety, and TailwindCSS to style the application, resulting in a visually appealing and responsive design. Using mockaroo, I generated fictitious data, saved it in a file, and imported it into other files as needed. Additionally, I added a few features to the website to make it more dynamic and engaging. I got my first paid job as a Designer but I didn't see my work launch 🥺 Sometime in March, I got a message on my WhatsApp of someone saying they saw my profile on Behance (https://lnkd.in/d_gWkWZi) and they liked my design. At first, I thought it was a scam because how did he get my WhatsApp number to begin with?? 😳 I followed through with the conversation and said client expressed his love for the work I did on my OWA APP ( https://lnkd.in/dde48fHV ) and he wanted me to recreate something like that for his app, but first he needed me to carryout a task, of which he would pay for, which was to design a landing page for his rideshare app. The whole process of working with him was interesting, I would say, but a part of me still didn't trust that he was going to pay me for my work, this thinking was generally fueled by the horror stories I've heard about Nigerian designers not being paid for their work by Foreign clients, but I still carried on. After a lot of back and forth on the job, I finally handed over the landing page, and he paid me the balance with some more ☺️. This made me so happy, however, I couldn't continue on the job, because one of our major challenges was the time difference and expected time of delivery. Now, here's one part newbie designers like myself struggle with, we second guess a lot of our work and we never think that clients will actually use what we've designed, at least for me, that was how I felt. So since then that I had delivered the job till yesterday, I never thought he actually used my work. Yesterday, while working on another design project, I decided to google the website and lo and behold, I saw what I designed 🥹. I felt so proud and accomplished that my first work was finally launched and executed. My first task as a social media manager was to get acquainted with the google workspace. As someone who has never had the need to use all tools, it was quite challenging. Here is a documentation of what the google workspace entails and how conversant I am with it now. What is Google Workspace? Google Workspace also known as G Suite is a set of communication and collaboration apps built for people in organizations. The tools I worked with include: Gmail - used to send or receive emails. Google Drive - used to create folders for file organization. Google Docs - used to create, and share documents easily. Google Sheets - used to create and edit online spreadsheets. Google Slides - used to create, edit and share slideshows. Google Calendar - used for organizing schedules. Google Meet - used for online meetings. It wasn’t an easy ride as using these tools for the first time wasn’t quite a friendly one. It took me about three days to navigate and use the tools expressly. The wait and hurdle wasn’t in vain though, as I can now: 📌 Schedule meetings. 📌 Create slides for visual communication and presentation. 📌 Send mails. 📌 Share documents easily. 📌 Organize files by creating folders. 📌 Manage and Analyse data efficiently. As we start a new week, I though to share with you the importance of having a user friendly interface. A friendly User Interface plays a pivotal role in ensuring user satisfaction and fosters brand loyalty. With so much competition in the tech industry, retaining consumers is paramount. The ultimate goal of every UI is to make the consumers stick to the website and keep coming back and one of the ways to achieve this is to have a friendly User Interface. A User Interface is the link between a user and a website. It is those qualities that make up a website such as visuals, colors, responsiveness and more. It is well-designed interface, easy to navigate, not cumbersome and self-explanatory. When a UI is easy to navigate, users feel more comfortable and confident interacting with the website or application. This reduces frustration and encourages users to explore further, ultimately leading to increased engagement and prolonged interactions. Moreover, a friendly UI cultivates an emotional connection between the user and the digital product. Through thoughtful design elements such as appealing visuals, harmonious colors, and responsive layout, users are more likely to develop a sense of trust and attachment to the brand. Ensuring that users of all abilities can easily access and interact with the product is key. When I began my coding journey, my laptop had just 2GB of RAM and a 120GB hard disk. Later, I upgraded to 4GB RAM and a 320GB HDD. Those days were challenging. With my Ubuntu operating system, every day presented new difficulties. I was constantly fixing Ubuntu errors or addressing laptop issues. I had to resolve numerous problems and reformat my laptop multiple times. It felt like life was determined to test my resolve. I wasn't alone in using such laptops, yet mine seemed to crash consistently. Despite crying, praying, and getting angry, nothing changed. I had no choice but to endure. I didn't quit. Thankfully, Google provided solutions to most problems. Unbeknownst to me, life was preparing me for the future. It was imparting lessons that would be invaluable for teaching others. Life foresaw that I would become an instructor, and those experiences would be crucial. Today, many of my students wonder if I studied debugging as a specialized course. They are curious about how I acquired such extensive knowledge, even beyond coding. They do not realize the hardships I endured to reach this point—the frustration, depression, and disappointment that ultimately shaped me. Now, I use these experiences to assist others facing similar challenges. I can genuinely say: "Thank God for those tough days." I am sharing this because I understand that failure and disappointment are inevitable, especially at the start of any journey. Sometimes, these challenges arise to teach you lessons that will benefit you in the long run. If you avoid them, you might still encounter them later when it might be harder to learn from them. Therefore, embrace them now. Embrace difficult times, as there is much to learn from them. I will conclude with this quote by James Sharp: "It is not every calamity that is a curse, and early adversity is often a blessing. 🚀 Built and Tested RESTful Authentication APIs with Laravel and Postman! I recently completed a project where I developed a robust authentication system using Laravel and Postman. Here’s a quick rundown of what I did: 🔐 User Registration and Login: Implemented secure user registration and login functionalities with Laravel Sanctum. Ensured strong password hashing and token-based authentication. 📧 Email Verification: Developed an email verification system. Upon registration, users receive a verification link via email. Used Laravel’s URL::temporarySignedRoute for secure, time-limited verification links. 🔄 Password Reset: Created a password reset feature. Users can request a reset link via email, and reset their password securely using a one-time OTP code. 🛠️ RESTful API Development: Built RESTful APIs to handle all authentication processes efficiently, including routes for user profile retrieval and secure logout functionality. 🧪 API Testing with Postman: Leveraged Postman to rigorously test all the APIs, ensuring they are secure and reliable. Tested scenarios for registration, login, email verification, password reset, and user profile access. 🎯 Best Practices: Focused on API security and best practices to provide a smooth and secure user experience. Ensured validation at every step to prevent any data breaches or misuse. This project was a fantastic opportunity to deepen my backend development skills and refine my approach to API security and testing. Let me gist you on 3 things you need to know when using ChatGPT.. As a prompt engineer, content creator, machine learning student and generative AI enthusiast, I've studied intensely on ChatGPT and how to derive the best results and in all my research, 3 tips stand out. ChatGPT can be imagined as a huge box with many balls in of many sizes and colours and to get a desired ball from the box, you need to describe for it to be picked up. Since, ChatGPT uses English as its programming language, anyone can use it but when it comes to efficiency and getting desired, that's where the problem comes in. Here are 3 tips on your next search with ChatGPT 1. Be clear and specific Know that ChatGPT has been on how to complete human sentences with the next appropriate word(s). This means that until you provide context(a descriptive environment) to the word or situation you are referring to ChatGPT can get your results mixed up.  You need to keep your request simple but detailed. e.g. 1. What is LinkedIn? e.g. 2. What is the role of LinkedIn in building relationships? The second example will provide you with a more specific and desired result than the first. 2. Assume a role/expertise Chatgpt has been proven to also work better by giving it a role or position. (e.g, copywriter, graphic designer, chemist etc.) The advantage of this is that it enables the software to provide you with a response such a person in reality would have giving you to your problem. However, the downside is that for some roles, it can mix up it's knowledge and end up providing you with false information.  Note: This is why you need to verify your information you receive from ChatGPT. e.g. 1. Provide me with a workout schedule. e.g. 2. As a fitness coach, provide me with a male workout schedule for the next 30 days, starting as a beginner. 3. Use iterations for better results.  The fortunate, but sometimes unfortunate, thing is that no generative AI can produce the same result 100% accurately TWICE. Hence, when you request for a solution and the results don't meet your expectation, you can try again with the "regenerate" button. The earlier you learn to use ChatGPT expertly, the better.
