Increased Competition for MTN, Glo, and Others as Elon Musk Introduces Economical Starlink Mini Dish in Nigeria. Elon Musk's SpaceX is set to make waves in the Nigerian telecommunications sector with the launch of its innovative STARLINK mini dish. This state-of-the-art device is designed to revolutionize internet accessibility, particularly in regions where traditional connectivity solutions are inadequate. The Starlink mini dish, celebrated as a technological marvel, boasts compact dimensions of just 11.4 inches by 9.8 inches. This makes it significantly smaller and more portable than the current 23.4-inch by 15.07-inch model. Weighing a mere 2.4 pounds (or 3.4 pounds with the kickstand and DC cord), it is engineered for effortless transport and straightforward assembly, making it ideal for users who demand both flexibility and convenience. This compact and portable design is perfect for individuals who live in remote areas or those who travel frequently. The Starlink mini dish can easily be packed into a backpack, ensuring that robust internet connectivity is available anywhere, thereby bridging the digital divide. TD Africa, the continent’s foremost distributor of technology products, is spearheading the introduction of Starlink in Nigeria. This strategic move has captured significant public attention, positioning Starlink as a formidable competitor in the market. According to recent data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Starlink ranked third in total ISP subscriptions in Nigeria during the fourth quarter of 2023, highlighting the growing demand for its services. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has demonstrated the Starlink mini's impressive capabilities, which include an 11.5 Mbps upload speed, a 100 Mbps download speed, and a 23 ms latency. These performance metrics are more than sufficient to support multiple 4K video streams, seamless audio and video calls, and rapid file downloads, thereby enhancing the overall user experience. A key selling point of the Starlink mini dish is its affordability. The device is expected to be priced at approximately half the cost of the standard dish, making it accessible to a wider audience. This competitive pricing strategy is likely to drive significant adoption in Nigeria, where the high cost of internet access has been a longstanding barrier. As the naira strengthens against the US dollar, Starlink has reduced the price of its hardware by 45% to N440,000. This means the new mini dish could retail for N220,000 in Nigeria, making it an attractive option for consumers seeking reliable and affordable internet solutions. With persistent fibre optic cable outages affecting internet connectivity in Nigeria, many are turning to satellite internet as a viable alternative. The Starlink mini dish represents a critical advancement in addressing these connectivity challenges, offering a dependable solution that promises to transform internet access across the country.

The MTN-MIP3 application... MTN-MIP3 is sponsored by MTN in collaboration with Pan Atlantic university Lagos, hence it is a tough and competitive fellowship. I understood that I was not the only person who wanted to be selected so I needed to stand out in my application. Of course, I read through the questions and took three days to articulate my answers and also find out my WHY. When I was satisfied with my answer, I sent in my application... Amazingly, I got the email of the next stage which requires writing of an essay. The essay was narrowed down to our finding a need in our immediate environment and a technological solution for it. I stay in Onitsha, and anyone who had lived in Onitsha can point out lots of challenges faced by a modern and growing commercial city, which houses the largest market in West Africa. Well, I turned it to an academic research, I was not writing for myself, as what I considered a challenge may not be for others. I decided to carry out a research to find out the most pressing need. The responses from people who live in Onitsha pointed out to insecurity, power failure, traffic congestion, improper waste management etc, as the major pain points. I had to narrow it down to Waste Management in Onitsha, and researching extensively on it opened my eyes to a danger we have all been ignoring in Onitsha. Again, I was writing for humans and humanity, not AI. The essay should pin point human pains, and profer a solution that will be driven by technology. The essay is 650 words, which means that more than it could get one disqualified hence after writing, I had to ensure that it was accurate. Instruction is life. All these exercise happened within 72hours... when the portal for submission was dropped, I submitted my article. The portal had plagiarism checker so if anyone copied from anywhere in the world or wrote verbatim from AI, it will immediately show it. ... and in May, To the glory of God, I got the email that I was selected as part of the 20 fellows of MTN-MIP3. My 1st response was to get on my knees and sang praises to my God and thank Him for the favour... I was super excited to be selected for such a prestigious training. I had to share this process for you to know that YOU CAN. Kindly understand that we all have equal access. That dream... that vision... that mission is possible and a done deal. Go for it and God will cause every living and non living thing to favour you. Congratulations to all the fellows of MTN-MIP3. I love you all. The Landmark Centre, Lekki, Lagos was a business masterpiece. Everything from professional conferences to celebrity weddings was hosted there, bringing much needed foreign exchange to the country, not to mention the many jobs it helped create. It was avoidably destroyed to make way for this 'realignment'. The realignment they have now abandoned because of cables they were previously warned about. And now, the Government is disputing the amount of compensation they should be awarded, if any. It has often been said that our new Minister of Works is a civil engineer, and as such, I would have expected him to know this beforehand. Was he just too proud to take advice from private-sector experts? I agree with you Ndubuisi Ekekwe. Truly, some people do need to be fired for this embarrassment. Some Ministers are doing quite well I admit (I follow Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, on LinkedIn and it seems he is working). However, this whole Landmark/Realignment saga has been an absolute disgrace. It's so hard being a business owner in Nigeria. I wonder how Landmark's CEO is feeling today.

The MPC started their meeting today on the back heel of increased MPR in March 2024 from 22.75% to 24.75%, (The second rate hike under Cardoso’s tenure as CBN Governor). Also, the LDR of banks was reduced from 65% to 50%. I earlier opined that these two decisions were counterproductive and was justified as we witnessed Inflation Rate increase from 33.20% in March of 2024 to 33.69% in April as well as increase in unemployment rate (5%). We have also witnessed other hasty fiscal policies targeted at increasing tax revenue in Nigeria with little consideration of the impacts. Now the reality is that with these hikes in MPR, increase in tax rates, reduction in LDR even in the midst of unstable exchange rates, the most impacted is the MANUFACTURING ECONOMY. Personally I don’t see how a nation can grow with high and multiple taxation, narrowing borrowing options, unstable exchange rate, amongst others which have resulted into a near-comatose manufacturing sector, exits of multinationals such as GSK, PZ Cussons, P&G, and other multinationals, etc. I urge the MPC to have a wholistic assessment of the impacts of previous policies and come up with strategies that can help the economy other than this hasty resort to over taxing the already overburdened economy. Some of the points covered in today's session – how to survive and thrive. NB: take the fastest route to the cash and let customers tell/show you what they want. Don't presume you know what they want better than them. (AI summary so not perfect!) Build sustainably • get as much cash flowing as you can doing good work for customers. • let the customer guide and inform you so you can shape your offering further. • patience and consistent effort are necessary to see substantial returns. • immediate gains might not be sustainable without a solid foundation. Competitor analysis • identify and adopt practices that make your business easier and more appealing to work with. • streamline processes, improve customer service, and enhance user experience. • see what your competitors are up to: regularly monitor competitors to stay informed about their strategies and offerings.   • learn from their successes and mistakes to refine your approach. • use competitor insights to identify gaps in the market and opportunities for differentiation. Time audit • what am i doing? • conduct a detailed analysis of daily activities. • identify time-wasting tasks and eliminate or delegate them. • use productive hours for key stuff only. • focus on high-energy periods for critical tasks. • ensure that most productive hours are used for high-impact activities. • doesn't matter who you are: time management is crucial regardless of position or role; and everyone benefits from optimizing their schedule and productivity. 80/20 rule (pareto principle) • 20% of activities, 80% of results • 4% of activities = majority of results. • identify the small percentage of activities that yield the majority of results. • prioritize these activities to maximize efficiency and output. • regularly review and adjust priorities to stay aligned with goals. Value ladder • start somewhere • build trust over time: • building trust with clients or customers is the foundation of the value ladder. • invest time in establishing credibility and relationships. • three tiers of offerings: • foot in the door: initial, low-cost or free offerings to attract and engage potential clients. Examples: free consultations, basic services, or introductory products. • middle: intermediate offerings that provide more value and require a higher investment. Examples: standard services, subscription plans, or mid-tier products. • high end: premium services or products for top-tier clients willing to pay more for exclusive value. Examples: bespoke services, high-end products, or comprehensive packages. Dear Future Me, As I write this letter, I am nearing the completion of the 3MTT Nigeria program, and I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and excitement for the future.
