Last week, the IITA-BIOSCIENCE CENTER held a a one week intensive training in Molecular Biology techniques, during which participants trained on conducting PCR analysis, quality and quantity check of extracted nucleic acid using a Nanodrop Spectrophotometer and Agarose Gel Electrophoresis. For five days, beneficiaries were taken through eye-opening modules in molecular biology techniques, IITA Molecular Geneticist, Ranjana Bhattacharjee took an interactive session on molecular markers and their breeding applications. The IITA Bioscience Center is helping young researchers master the practical aspects of molecular biology while offering mentorship from renowned researchers and an opportunity to forge networks. Cocoa cultivation identified as a major lever in the fight against deforestation in the Congo Basin 🌳 The conversion of forests to agricultural land is responsible for most of global deforestation, while forests represent an important safety net for rural population to mitigate agricultural risks and cope with seasonal and climatic stresses. 💡 75% of the world's poor population lives in rural areas and the products and services provided by forests represent 1/4 of total household income. ❗️ In the Congo Basin, it is more urgent than ever to curb deforestation due to the activities of rural households and to develop sustainable agricultural systems. To promote the implementation of effective policies, INRAE researchers, in collaboration with UNEP-WCMC International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Congo Basin Institute Club @ UCLA, Centre de recherche forestière internationale (CIFOR) and UCLA, examined the impact of household livelihood strategies on deforestation in the Congi Basin. The study outlines the key role of cocoa cultivation in the fight against deforestation in this region. ______________________ 🇫🇷 La conversion des forêts en terres agricoles est responsable de la majeure partie de la déforestation mondiale. Alors que 75 % de la population pauvre dans le monde vit dans des zones rurales, les produits et services rendus par les forêts représentent 1/4 du revenu total des ménages. Les forêts constituent ainsi un filet de sécurité pour ces populations. Dans le bassin du Congo, il est plus urgent que jamais de freiner la déforestation due aux activités des ménages ruraux et de développer des systèmes agricoles durables. Une nouvelle étude examine l’impact des stratégies de subsistance des ménages sur la déforestation tropicale grâce à l’économétrie spatiale et révèle un levier important de lutte contre la déforestation : la culture cacaoyère. ⤵

Strengthening phytosanitary skills: Detecting and controlling seed-borne pathogens: The Virology and Germplasm Health Units of International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) organized a training course titled “Diagnostics and phytosanitary methods for the detection and elimination of seed-borne pathogens” from 10 to 14 June. The training included 15 early career staff responsible for pre- and post-entry quarantine from the NAQS. https://lnkd.in/ew-GSw_T
