Learning through play lays the proper foundation for lifelong learning, contributing to children's overall development and foundational learning, equipping them with the skills they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. Play is considered children's "work" and is the vehicle through which children acquire knowledge and skills, allowing children to engage independently and with others. At AREAi, we believe that the foundational years of a child's education play a huge role in their academic performance in the future, which is why we integrate play as an essential strategy for learning in our Fastrack program. “There is no substitute for books in the life of a child.” ~ May Ellen Chase Access to books plays a crucial role in fostering a love for reading and learning among children. However, schools in rural communities face unique challenges in obtaining a diverse range of books due to limited funding and resources. In collaboration with Let’s Talk Humanity @lthinitiative, we launched the inaugural Giving Tuesday event themed “Literacy Lift-Off” at the L.E.A Primary School, Kabusa. This event provides children with abundant opportunities to read books at their own competency levels, gradually enhancing their reading and writing skills. We distributed a variety of books tailored to each class’s curriculum, along with captivating storybooks that not only expand young minds but also ignite a lifelong passion for learning. For us, this event signifies more than just the provision of books; it represents an opportunity to inspire children to dream big, acquire knowledge, and achieve greatness. We are confident that this event will significantly impact education in Schools by harnessing the transformative power of books. Last week, our team was represented at the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Conference 2024 by Omoniyi Lawson, our Digital Communications Officer, and Chukwuemeka Nwokocha, our Monitoring and Evaluation Associate. The conference gathered policymakers, innovators, telcos, learning institutions, and young people to drive transformative change in education across Africa. It was a profound learning experience, unveiling the intricate challenges plaguing Africa's educational sector and the innovative solutions actively addressing them. As we commemorate World Youth Skills Day today, we proudly celebrate the commitment and resilience of Doris, who is striving for knowledge and enhanced capacity to thrive in our ever-evolving world. Through our Digital Skills Accelerator for Girls and Women (DSA), Doris is learning the digital skills essential to excel in her dream job. Like every other girl in her class, she aspires to become a productive member of our community and contribute to our collective digital transformation. This year's theme, Youth Skills for Peace and Development, highlights the pivotal role young people play in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. With the skills she is acquiring, Doris is preparing for a successful career and empowering herself to be a force for peace and positive change in her community. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, "Today and every day, let's urgently work to transform education. Let's ensure that youth have what they need to build skills for shaping a more peaceful, sustainable future for all." This transformation is a possibility and a reality to which we actively contribute.
