Is anyone else experiencing no butterflies or bees this year? We live out of town, and one of my favorite summer activities is to sit on the porch and listen to and watch the butterflies and bees flitting around the flowers. So far this year I've seen one swallowtail butterfly, one little white one and one tiny brown one and a few bees. A couple years ago I videoed a dozen or more swallowtail flitting around our milkweed. Zero this year.

Batteries going into the landfill aren't just a waste, they're dangerous for the environment. But here's some good news about a new nationwide program to address the problem. https://www.wired.com/story/it-will-soon-be-easier-for-americans-to-recycle-batteries/ Updated: The article notes that Batteries Plus and Staple stores nationwide will be participating. I asked if the Batteries Plus store on NW 9th is doing this already. Replies from community members (thank you!) indicate that the store already takes all of the battery types mentioned in this article (possibly for a fee in the case of alkaline batteries). I will update this further as soon as I get a chance to digest and summarize all of the information received. Meanwhile thank you to those who responded.

On June 19th between 6 & 6:30 pm my elderly neighbor was robbed near Kings Circle Shopping Center. She was walking her dog on NW 17th St toward NW Maple Ave. Our friend was in an emotional state, still grieving the loss of her husband 18 months ago. A light colored SUV pulled up alongside her and stopped. Four occupants: A stout man wearing a face concealing baseball cap was driving; a petite attractive woman in passenger seat; two early school age children- boy and girl- in back seat. The woman engaged our neighbor in conversation; this woman told her that she would get through this hard time. Our neighbor was confused because she couldn't recall meeting these people and was trying to keep her dog under control. The woman in the passenger seat made a couple more soothing comments and then told our neighbor that she wanted to give her some jewelry to help make her feel better. Our neighbor politely said that that she couldn't accept the jewelry, but was encouraged by the passenger to lean into the car window and accepted a necklace that the woman fastened around our neighbor's neck. When our neighbor returned home she realized that the valuable gold necklace, that was connected to her husband for 37 years, had been stolen. This incident is terrible for many reasons. I am posting this as an alert and to hear from members if they have seen/heard about similar incidents.

Today at Fred Meyers a man left his golden retriever in a car all the way back in rear in hot sun no window down,no water . Leash attached to dog and he was panting up a storm.I went into Fred Meyers they did a overhead page.Still no.one ,Fred Meyers employee came out with me and finally a guy came out.Told us he was only in the there 5 minutes. I was out there over 20 minutes. I watched several people go past car and saw the dog in distress. PLEASE I know u don't want involved but call police..The guy was older and very belligerent, thats your best friend,leave him home.

My husband and I heard a gunshot approximatley 1:30 PM today (6/23/24). Twenty minutes later a neighbor knocked on our door to ask us if we saw the dead doe laying in the street/neighbors yard. We walked out to see the doe with a very evident gunshot to the head. This is very frightening that someone would shoot a gun in a heavily populated area and kill an innocent animal. The authorities have been notified.

Did anyone on Oak Ave. have this guy come to their house yesterday (7/15)? He came to my gate and banged on it before he even came to my front door. Then in the middle of all of it, a car pulled up in front of my house with people in it.

A woman who lives nearby, whom I've seen a handful of times, came onto our porch and tried to steal my daughters' swimsuits. We saw her right away and quickly opened the door, causing her to drop the swimsuits as she fled. **A report has been made.**

New Morning Bakery

We love New Morning Bakery. They handled catering (delicious box lunches) for my husband's 60th CHS Class reunion last month and did a FANTASTIC job. I know of more than one group of friends who meet there regularly and sing their praises. Not sure what specifically you are complaining about. They get an A+ from us.
