South Korea’s plan to consider a carbon tax is likely to face steep opposition.

The tax—announced by President Moon Jae-in’s liberal Democratic Party—would form part of a plan to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. But businesses may fight the effort.

The announcement comes ahead of South Korea’s general election next month and has been adopted into the manifestos of two of the government’s political opponents, the Justice Party and the Green Party. The government hasn’t yet announced any details of the proposal.
