Families of Newark firefighters killed at Port Newark file $50M lawsuit

The July 2023 fire killed Augusto “Augie” Acabou and Wayne “Bear” Brooks, Jr. The pair became trapped on the ship during the fire.

The families of two Newark firefighters killed while fighting a fire at Port Newark last year have filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit.
The July 2023 fire killed Augusto “Augie” Acabou and Wayne “Bear” Brooks, Jr. The pair became trapped on the ship during the fire.
The families are suing the city of Newark, the Newark Fire Department, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and others. They claim that the deaths could have been prevented.
