The Ravalli County Museum is preparing for a new exhibit exploring Glacier National Park, and a fundraiser that features the work of local artists Ernst Peterson and Robert Neaves.
“Looking back at Glacier: Vintage Views 1910-1940” will be in the courtroom gallery from Jan. 11 to March 9. The art exhibit is from the Lee Silliman Print Collection of Missoula.
Museum Director Michelle Nowling said the collection has beautiful works.

Ravalli County Museum Director Michelle Nowling references some of the images in the “Looking back at Glacier: Vintage Views 1910-1940” that will be in the courtroom gallery from Jan. 11 to March 9.
“Mr. Silliman has put together 58 images that are original prints from 1910-1940 that were published in souvenir albums, brochures, newspapers and postcards,” Nowling said. “All of them were promoting Glacier National Park. There are some illustrations, some that are the covers of travel magazines, others are photographs and lithographs. They are all beautiful.”

Silliman will launch the exhibit with an illustrated historical lecture at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11.
“He’ll have slides of the images and tell what they are and where they came from,” Nowling said. “He’ll tell us what we learn from these historical images. He is a great presenter. He did this for us when we had the bison exhibit two years ago and he’s just fascinating. I’m excited that he is going to come and do a presentation.”

The Ravalli County Museum has a new exhibit called “Looking back at Glacier: Vintage Views 1910-1940” about promoting the National Park. The images are from the Lee Silliman Print Collection of Missoula and will be in the courtroom gallery from Jan. 11 to March 9.
The exhibit includes the image of Glacier Park on the May 1912 cover of Travel Magazine, several postcards and stereo views together in framed units, beautiful photos and artwork in the style of the era and details about the artists and photographers when that information is known.
“It’s very much a ‘Come see Glacier’ and they were calling the tall peaks ‘the Swiss Alps of America,’” Nowling said. “Some images are from the Great Northern Railway but we don’t know who the artist or photographer is, it might have been a booklet you got from the railroad.”
The “Looking back at Glacier” 48 frames and 51 images are on new display boards at the museum.

Ravalli County Museum Director Michelle Nowling is holding a Jeanette Rankin composite painted by local, independent artist Robert Neaves. A selection of his prints and artist’s proofs will be for sale at the Ravalli County Museum fundraiser on Jan. 18.
“Most of the panels and all of the new lighting system were bought through a grant from the Rapp Family Foundation,” Nowling said. “We didn’t have lights for our panels and we have doubled our light grey display boards. Everything hangs so nicely.”
Nowling said the wonderful “Looking back at Glacier” exhibit will only be in Hamilton for two months, as it is then scheduled to go to a museum in Bozeman. She recommends hurrying to see it before it is gone.
Museum fundraiser
The Ravalli County Museum is hosting a fundraiser featuring the works of Ernst Peterson and Robert Neaves from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18.
“We have our Ernst Peterson collection of photographs book ('The Bitterroot Valley: Seasons of Beauty') and have pulled eight images from that which will be available for limited edition prints,” Nowling said. “You can buy the book or order your prints in various sizes and you’ll get a certificate that says we will not sell that image again for 50 years. So, it gives you a unique image that is really gorgeous. We’re only selling the prints through the end of January.”

The Ravalli County Museum has a collection of Ernst Peterson photos for sale in the book “The Bitterroot Valley: Seasons of Beauty” for sale in the gift shop. Eight of those images will be available for limited edition and exclusive prints during the “Peterson and Neaves” fundraiser on Jan. 18.
All images were taken in the Bitterroot Valley. Nowling suggests the book makes a great coffee table display, or can be sent to a friend to show Montana.
“We have ordered several frames to display them and people can buy them with the frame, or they can buy it on core board, or just the image, whatever works for them,” Nowling said. “We can mount it for people.”
The museum will also offer a selection of prints and artist’s proofs by artist Robert Neaves for sale.
Neaves was a local, independent artist who passed away in 2018. After Neaves passed, the Ravalli County Museum was gifted many of his prints.
All the images in his collection are numbered and most are signed.
For the fundraising night, the museum will have four composites including portraits of Marcus Daly, Jeanette Rankin and Mike Mansfield and several wildlife prints for sale.
“They come unframed but you can frame them to match your house,” Nowling said.
There is no entry fee to the open-house style event with light refreshments and live music by three musicians of the Bitterroot String Ensemble, David and Julie Bethman and Tatiana Horton.
There will be a “wish-list wall” listing specific items needed by the museum with amounts ranging from $10 to $100.
“If people want to donate printer paper or kids craft supplies that will be on the wish wall,” Nowling said. “We hope it will be a fun night for people to come out and give to the museum. We want to be able to offer our events for free but it does require some support from our community.”
Nowling praised the community for their generosity.
“This is the most giving community I’ve lived in, and I’ve worked in museums in six states,” she said. “I’m always amazed at the people here. I’m excited that we’ll have a great turnout. I’m optimistic that the weather will be kind to us.”
Enjoy the new “Looking back at Glacier” exhibit Jan. 11 to March 9 and the “Peterson and Neaves” fundraiser on Jan. 18 at Ravalli County Museum, 205 Bedford St. in Hamilton.
