about

This is my third release as MirrorBoxx. I think it's the most developed musical statement I've made so far with this project. Sure, it's dark, but the shadowy paranoia is balanced by periodic rays of light (major chords?!). The sound is more expansive; it's warm and full. You may detect the influence of iconic synthesizer/electronic music such as Kraftwerk, Bowie, Drexciya, Numan, etc. along with elements of dub and psychedelia. I attempted to use these elements to create a sound that went beyond the confines of genre into something that sounds fresh to my ears.
The story of Maximum Program is centered around the Moog Matriarch, materially and conceptually. I got this synth in 2022. The origin of each track was me exploring the instrument’s semi-modular paraphonic synthesis. Rather than writing songs prior to entering the studio, as has generally always been my process, each track began as an experiment in texture and atmosphere on the Matriarch. By patching the analog signal through the instrument’s attenuators, you can introduce resistance to the signal. I took my time with these tracks, examining the contradictions within each piece, layering and editing to amplify the tension and create resolution. This is how these 9 songs took shape. The only other synth used on the album was the Mimimoog Voyager. As for rhythm, many percussion sounds were programmed on these two synths in addition to my trusted Roland TR8S drum machine. Minimal gear, maximum sound.
The Matriarch was the last major product that Moog released as an employee-owned manufacturer that hand-built its instruments in Asheville, NC. In 2023, Moog was acquired by private equity firm InMusic, who laid off the majority of its staff and moved aspects of production to Asia for lower production costs.
Maximum Program is about the production process. Not just me producing this music entirely alone in my room then pushing it out into the infinite void of online content, but also about how we produce the things we consume and how culture manifests around this. How does technology impact our relationship to time and space? How are our social relations and our relationship with our environment impacted by the production process? These are the ideas that took hold as I put this album together.
