Matthew Richard Houk Borsch

July 24, 1964 – June 30, 2024

Matthew Borsch, 59, died June 30, 2024, at Hudson Valley Hospice House.  His death was sudden, coming only a month after he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Matt was a long-time resident of both Millbrook, N.Y, and Bronxville N.Y. and before that New York City.  Born in Birmingham, England he was proud of that heritage, maintaining dual citizenship in the United Kingdom and the United States.  Matt is survived by Elizabeth (Betsy) Bastien Borsch, his wife of 22 years, and their son Jack, 21, as well as his elder brother Benjamin and identical twin brother Stuart, their wives Jeannie Borsch and Fang Zang, three nieces, three nephews, two aunts, one uncle, and several cousins.

Matt graduated from Johns Hopkins University and held two advanced degrees from Columbia University.  He began his career with Anderson Consulting, which led to two long-term assignments in Istanbul and Tokyo.  Before and after his work in Istanbul in particular, he traveled extensively in Europe and the Middle East.  During this time, he particularly enjoyed opportunities to meet up with friends from Princeton High School and Johns Hopkins who had either settled abroad or were also traveling.  Following his advanced studies at Columbia, where he also served as an adjunct professor, he worked to develop physician networks for Physicians Health Services and Telesis Medical Management.  He joined Goldman Sachs in 2002 and began a distinguished career as an equity analyst.  After leaving Goldman Sachs, he worked at Bank of Montreal and finally at Water Tower Research.  Matt is remembered by his colleagues not only for his keen intellect and insight, but also for his energy, his humor, his compassion, and a gift for team building.

From the time he was a child, Matthew possessed an incredible amount of energy and curiosity. He spent much of his free time outdoors, both at the home he and Betsy designed in Millbrook and when he travelled.  He was a determined golfer and enjoyed playing with his father, his son Jack, and his friends.  He loved to camp.  Growing up, he shared his family’s love for canoeing and camping in Canada’s Quetico Provincial Park and returned there several times with friends and family members as an adult.  He also led his friends on other camping adventures across North America.  Matt swam and played water polo in middle and high school and throughout his life took any opportunity to swim in waters of any temperature.

Matt loved to learn. He read extensively, preferring subjects such as history, economics, business, and biography.  At home, he constantly had projects going. He taught himself woodworking and built all kinds of gadgets (a homemade ball return for his basement putting green was a particular favorite).  Even on vacation at annual family gatherings at the beach in Florida, he embarked each year on a massive multi-day sandcastle creation.  Matt was successful, smart, hard-working, and caring. Most of all, he will be remembered for his love of his family and his friends, his generous spirit and his talent for making friends wherever he went.

A celebration of life will be held on July 12 at 10:30 am at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Lithgow, New York.  Memorial gifts may be made to St. Peter’s, http://stpeterslithgow.org.  Gifts may be made to the endowment with identification for the memory of Matthew Borsch.

Arrangements are under the direction of Horn & Thomes, Inc Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling, NY.
