WHITE PLAINS – Putnam County is not the only place where harmful algae blooms are placing water bodies off limits to swimming.

The Westchester County Health Department has closed two beaches at Mohegan Lake until further notice due to the presence of harmful algae bloom in the swimming areas.

The Mohegan Colony Association and Mohegan Beach Park District, both at Mohegan Lake, are closed. They are the only county regulated beaches on the lake.

County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler said the decision to cose the beaches was a precautionary measure for the safety and health of the public.

She noted that harmful algae blooms are more prevalent during hot days when water temperatures rise, leading to increased bacteriological growth rates.

In order for the beaches to be reopened, the algae must be completely cleared from the swimming area followed by water sample analysis.
