MAYBROOK – A girl who jumped from an emergency exit of a school bus when it blew a rear passenger-side tire on the evening of July 3, sustained a severe head injury, State Police said Friday.

The Omni bus carrying 29 passengers was traveling east on Interstate 84 in the Town of Montgomery at around 7:17 p.m. on its way to an amusement park in Danbury, Connecticut when the tire blew.

Troopers said as the bus slowed down suddenly, the female passenger opened the rear emergency exit while the bus was still moving. She was injured when she struck the roadway and was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla where she was listed in critical condition.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the State Police at 845-344-5300.
