Shooting investigation on Main Street

POUGHKEEPSIE – A 28-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot in the head early Friday morning in Poughkeepsie.  Three women, ages 29, 27, and 23, were also shot in the Main Street incident that took place at approximately 3:30 a.m.

Acting Police Chief Rich Wilson told Mid-Hudson News that 911 received reports of shots fired near the intersection of Hamilton and Academy Streets.  Responding officers arrived to find a crowd of “several hundred people,” according to Wilson.  Additional police agencies were requested to the scene to assist with dispersing the crowd.

The officers located four victims, a man who had been shot in the head and three women with less serious gunshot wounds.  Officers immediately began life-saving measures, including using tourniquets before the victims were transported to local hospitals for additional treatment.  The man is in critical condition.

City cops were assisted by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Hyde Park Police, Fishkill Police, MTA Police, and others in dispersing the crowd, allowing detectives from the City of Poughkeepsie to begin their investigation.

The block of Main Street between Academy and Hamilton Streets was still closed at 8:30 a.m. Friday as detectives and crime scene technicians collected evidence.

Acting Chief Wilson noted that security cameras in the area show one shooter firing a gun.

The investigation is continuing.  Anyone with information is asked to call the confidential TIP LINE at 845-451-7577.
