MID-HUDSON – A fierce storm packing heavy rain, lightning and strong winds barreled through the Mid-Hudson Valley late Wednesday afternoon, toppling trees, downing powerlines and igniting them.

Ariel Santoro of Woodbury was terrified when she heard a crash as she was watching TV. The noise woke up her two-year-old daughter.

A large tree had crashed through her roof as water rushed into the home. “Thank God everyone is okay,” she said.

Orange and Rockland Utilities reported thousands of people without power in the two counties with crews working through the night and into Thursday to restore power.

The fast moving storm also impacted parts of Sullivan, Ulster, Dutchess and Putnam counties as lightning, wind and heavy rain had the same devastating impacts in those areas.
