Though immortalized for her recurring role as Emmanuelle Arsan, Sylvia Kristel’s finest performance may very well be in Borowczyk’s deliriously sensual adaptation of a 1967 novel by André Pieyre de Mandiargues, in which La Kristel plays a jaded Parisian sex worker who ties up straightlaced, happily married businessman Joe Dallesandro in the gossamer web of her charms, until his increasingly obsessive attentions draw the ire of her pimp and hasten his tragic downfall. Released in some territories as Emmanuelle ’77, La Marge is a bewitching journey into the dark side of the City of Lights, set to a wide-ranging soundtrack that finds room for Pink Floyd, Chopin, and Elton John. Screening in the director's preferred version.
