The Scala, a cherished destination for outré-minded London cinephiles from 1978 to its closure in 1993, which did much to introduce the midnight movie cult and grindhouse fare grue to the British capitol, comes in for a loving tribute in this documentary by Catterall and Giles (a former Scala programmer), previously collaborators on a Kraszna-Krausz award-winning book on the cinema, who here collect testimonials and fond memories from scores of former Scala devotees, including filmmakers John Waters, Ben Wheatley, and Mary Harron. “A very entertaining madeleine for movie-going of the analogue age,” per The Guardian, resurrecting the air of “a movie theater with the excitement of a 24/7 punk festival.”
