The opening gambit in what’s been dubbed von Trier’s “Depression Trilogy” caused a furor at Cannes with its shockingly graphic violence… and also earned Best Actress honors for Charlotte Gainsbourg, frightfully committed as playing one half of a couple—alongside Willem Dafoe—who, following the death of their infant child, have withdrawn from the world in a secluded cabin in the woods. Rather than initiating any kind of healing process, their grieving in isolation and psychotherapy sessions open the door to still greater terrors, including harrowing hallucinations, bouts of sexual violence and torture, and a blaze-of-glory climax unlike any in cinema. Chaos reigns, indeed.
