Happy birthday Kevin Bacon! (Picture: Variety)

Hollywood icon Kevin Bacon has celebrated his 66th birthday by posting a shirtless selfie as he poses in the sun.

The star rose to fame with a series of hits in the 1980s, quickly making his mark as one of the first teenagers to be killed in the Friday the 13th franchise (by Jason’s mom – not Jason Voorhees himself).

In 1984, he starred in what might be his signature role, playing young rebel Ren in the coming-of-age classic Footloose.

Since then, the actor has rarely been away from the silver screen – starring in 1990’s sci-fi horror film Tremors, as astronaut Jack Swigert in Apollo 13, and as a sleazy invisible man in 2000’s Hollow Man…. and all those EE mobile data ads too, of course.

And now, after almost fifty years in the industry, Kevin celebrates his 66th birthday.

Kevin can currently be seen as sleazy private eye John Labat in Ti West’s Maxxxine – the third instalment in a horror trilogy which also includes the director’s X and Pearl.

The smooth, toned Kevin Bacon of reality is a far cry from the slimy, moustache-wearing Labat, stalking Maxine Minx around1980s LA.

At the same time, Kevin can also be found in the Netflix sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, starring Eddie Murphy as the titular fast-talking police officer Axel Foley.

Kevin plays that film’s villain too, as the crooked Captain Grant – secretly working with local drug cartels to allow the trafficking of drugs within the city.

The actor is so prolific that he spawned the game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon – a parlor game where players challenge each other to choose an actor and then connect them to another actor via a film both have appeared in together.

In 2007, Kevin started a charity based on the game called SixDegrees.org, which encouraged followers to become ‘celebrities for their own cause.’In 2020, he appeared in the scripted comedy podcast The Last Degree of Kevin Bacon.

Kevin was also awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003. However, in spite of all of his achievements and accolades, he has never been awarded an Oscar – and hasn’t even attended the ceremony since 1984.

‘…I was invited to the Oscars to present because I was like the ‘It Boy’ of the year, right? So even being in Beverly Hills and sort of entering – I had done movies, but I was a New York guy. So Footloose that entered me into the world of Hollywood, if you will. So it was a big year for me,’ he recalled for People.

The actor recently revealed how he sought to experience life as a ‘normal’ person by taking to the town clad in face-obscuring prosthetics.

‘I’m not complaining, but I have a face that’s pretty recognisable. Putting my hat and glasses on is only going to work to a certain extent,’ he told Vanity Fair.

‘I went to a special effects makeup artist, had consultations, and asked him to make me a prosthetic disguise.’

Donning fake teeth and a prosthetic nose, he set out on a daytrip to a busy Los Angeles shopping centre.

‘Nobody recognised me. People were kind of pushing past me and not being nice,’ he revealed.

‘I was like, this sucks. I want to go back to being famous.’
