A murder investigation is underway following the death of a baby girl in Camden earlier this week.

The body of a newborn baby girl was discovered in a refuse container outside of a Camden flat close to Euston Station and buildings used by University College London, including its School of Slavonic and European Studies, and Campbell House, a student hall.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil John, leading the investigation, said: ‘We have carried out a range of enquiries since the body of a newborn baby girl was recovered on Monday.

‘Following forensic examination, we can now confirm that the baby was delivered full-term inside a residential address and her remains were later recovered by officers from a refuse container outside the building at Taviton Street.

‘This is a terribly sad and upsetting case for everyone involved and I would like to thank local residents for their patience as we continue with our enquiries and urge anyone with information to get in touch.

A 29-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of child destruction, but both have been released on bail.

The Met Police said the baby’s mum remains in a stable condition.

Photos taken at the scene show a forensics tent erected outside a property on the street, where homes are valued at up to £3 million.

It is a quiet road located 250 yards south of Euston Station, one of central London’s busiest train stations.

The property where the cordon has been erected is a block of flats that is owned by University of London, which told Metro.co.uk it rents out the flats to private tenants.

Georgia, 27, a PhD student, told Metro.co.uk earlier this week: ‘I’m extremely shocked. l did not know stuff like that happened around here. That’s absolutely horrible.

‘I think a while ago someone was shot nearby Euston station, but nothing like this.’

Workers at a nearby student area said they had no idea about the baby’s death.

‘It’s horrible,’ they said.

A UoL spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm that the University of London owns properties on Taviton Street, including a block of flats which is rented out to private tenants.

‘We’re aware of a police investigation into reports of a tragic death in the street. The University has not been contacted by the police but will assist with any investigation as required.’
