England v Switzerland: Quarter-Final - UEFA EURO 2024

England are through to the semi finals of Euro 2024 after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Switzerland.

The Three Lions looked on the brink of a premature exit when Breel Embolo bundled the Swiss ahead with 15 minutes remaining of normal time, only for Bukayo Saka to produce a stunning equaliser five minutes later.

Extra-time came and went with little by way of goalscoring action and so the contest went to penalties.

Jordan Pickford proved the hero with a save from Manuel Akanji to help send his side through to a last four clash against either Turkey or Netherlands.

This is how all the drama unfolded in Dusseldorf, with the Three Lions now just two games away from glory.

That’s all from us

Another quiet night at the office for England, then.

The Three Lions are in the semi-finals. Thanks for joining us this evening – we’ll be back on Wednesday night.

Southgate praises ‘brave’ England star for taking penalty

Bukayo Saka well and truly banished the demons of Euro 2020 with his superbly taken penalty.

Gareth Southgate singled out the Arsenal star for special praise.

‘I thought the players were brilliant, it is the best we have played. To come from behind and shown character and resilience we did… it isn’t just about playing well.

‘It was so brave from Bukayo, he is one of our best and we were never in question he would take one. But we all knew what he went through.’

Lampard wants one change for semi-final clash

Luke Shaw hadn’t played any football since February before coming on late on in the second-half this evening.

Not that you could tell.

Frank Lampard saw enough from that cameo off the bench and believes the Manchester United star must start midweek against Turkey or Netherlands.

‘If Luke Shaw is fit, he starts. He’s Gareth’s man,’ Lampard said.

‘If he is fit, I would play him for the balance of the team.’

Pickford came prepared

Jordan Pickford got England off to a wonderful start in that shoot-out, keeping out Manuel Akanji’s effort.

And the Everton star was well-prepared with a list of the Switzerland’s penalty takers handily printed on his water bottle.

Look closely, and you’ll spy ‘Akanji, dive left’.

Harry Kane injury update

That was a nasty landing for Harry Kane late on with Ivan Toney immediately brought onto replace him.

The captain looked in good spirits during those celebrations and appears to have eased any injury fears.

‘I’m fine, I’m fine. I had a bit of cramp there. The boss made a quick decision with Ivan being a proven penalty-taker.’

Redemption for Saka

Bukayo Saka was among those to miss from 12 yards in the last Euros final against Italy. Today, he was arguably their best player on the pitch and showed no nerves as he stroked his penalty home.

Saka: ‘It was special. Last time we had a penalty shootout at the Euros, we all know what happened.

‘I have faith in God to come back from something like that. Today, I took the chance and I’m happy.’

Alexander-Arnold the penalty hero

‘Incredible, these are the goals that we set for ourselves,’ the Liverpool star told BBC One.

‘Difficult opponent going behind and the team showed a lot of character, belief, heart and spirit out there.’

No boos this time

Jeers (and a few plastic cups) rained down on Gareth Southgate following that goalless draw with Slovenia in the final group game. None of that tonight.

The fans are jubilant, the players are jubilant.
