We���re only halfway through 2024, but President Joe Biden has already provided us with a strong contender for Meme of the Year – albeit inadvertently.
The US leader, 81, unknowingly channelled the one and only Britney Spears this week when quizzed on his predecessor Donald Trump’s guilty verdict.
Biden has already branded Trump ‘reckless’ for lashing out in an angry rant after he became the first former US President to become a convicted felon, having been found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide a hush money payment to silence adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
Press continued to question Biden after his address, with one woman asking: ‘Mr President, can you tell us, sir, Donald Trump refers to himself as a “political prisoner” and blames you directly, what’s your response to that, sir?’
‘Do you think the conviction will have an impact on the campaign?’, she added, referring to Trump’s bid for Office once more in the November 5 election.
‘We’d love to hear your thoughts, sir.’
In the truly brilliant clip, Biden can be seen walking away towards the door as the questions are fired at him, before he stops and turns his head.
The 46th US President offers a smile, staring at the press before walking off again.
Naturally, it didn’t take long for social media users to work their magic and connect Biden’s innocent little clip to another iconic moment in pop culture history.
The chronically online among you will know of Britney’s ‘walking up the steps’ viral video, in which she pauses, smiles at the audience, then turns back around while performing …Baby One More Time in Hawaii.
It’s a reaction video that has stood the test of time and now, thanks to Biden, has had fresh life breathed into it.
Before long, the internet was creating comparison videos and, well, let’s just say we did not have this on our 2024 bingo card – but it’s incredible and we’re here for it.
In fact, the side-by-side meme has been viewed over six million times on X alone, having been posted by _bella_baxter.
‘The similarity is almost uncanny, why’s it so perfect,’ replied angipangiin.
‘First thing I thought of when I saw Biden’s reaction lmao’, wrote MoString.
LucidScorsese joked that we are ‘living in a simulation’, while countless people were ‘in tears’ of laughter.
This isn’t the first time we’ve had a Biden x Britney crossover.
In November last year, the President confused Taylor Swift for the Toxic hitmaker on his 81st birthday.
‘It’s my birthday today… I just want you to know, it’s difficult turning 60 – it’s difficult,’ he started off by joking, before his memory did, in fact, fail him.
Biden said the two turkeys went through hard work to be selected to be with him on the White House lawn.
They had to ‘show patience and be willing to travel over 1,000 miles’, he added.
‘You could say even harder than getting a ticket to the Renaissance tour, or, or, or, Britney’s tour,’ he continued, shutting his eyes as he struggled with what he was trying to say.
‘She’s down in… it’s kind of warm in Brazil right now.’
He was, of course, referring to Taylor who, at the time, was performing a three-show run of her Eras Tour in Rio de Janeiro.
