About Rick Blight

My name is Donna Blight. Twelve years ago, my son Ryan, daughter Sarah, and I founded this scholarship in memory of Rick to acknowledge the important role of mental wellness in sports and academics.

Rick was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba in 1955. An exceptional athlete, he was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the first round, 10th overall in the 1975 NHL draft. At the age of 49, Rick died by suicide, survived by our children and four grandchildren. We cherish his memory. Ryan is a high school teacher in Manitoba, and Sarah is a registered nurse in B.C.

We wholeheartedly encourage you to apply for the Rick Blight Scholarship. An investment in your own mental wellness and of those around you is a tribute to Rick’s legacy.

The support and generosity of the Vancouver Canucks Alumni Association and Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group helps make this scholarship possible. We are immensely grateful.
