Demanding quality in education

"Our children don’t have time to wait. We don’t have time to wait. We can’t keep burying our children because of lack of education.”

Memphis Lift was created to make the powerless parent powerful.
UPLIFTING OUR COMMUNITY

We educate and empower parents to advocate for their children

If you live in Memphis and are poor, you have very little chance of getting a quality education. Parents and grandparents living in poverty struggle to have stable housing and put food on the table. They assume if their child is going to school, he or she is getting a good education. Unfortunately, that’s often not true.

We believe the people closet to the problem should lead the solution. We are demanding radical changes in public education.

Join our movement

Our movement is a powerful force for uplifting the lives in our communities. We engage parents from our neighborhoods, but also meet with and influence local, state and national policymakers. We will continue this fight until Memphis has a world-class education system where every child reaches their greatest potential.

Parents learn about the public education system and how to advocate for their children.

Parents get support and guidance to advocate for their children with special needs.

Parents get information and resources to find the best schools for their children.

Parents are identified, educated and mobilized to fight for quality education.

Parents notify MSCS board members of priorities and comment on actions taken.

Urgent Problem

  • 55 of the 81 lowest performing schools in the state of Tennessee are in Memphis
  • 79% of children are not reading on grade level
  • Only 2 out of 10 children are performing math on grade level

Urgent Action

  • We’ve knocked on over 25,000 doors to provide information to parents about Memphis schools
  • Over 5,000 parents have joined our movement
  • Parents are taking “My Child’s Learning Path” to teachers to get accurate information about their child’s progress
  • We successfully advocated for parents getting clear data about their child’s reading level. Report cards now include reading levels in addition to grades.
