The Drones of Conception and Delivery

An updated metaphor for our impoverished technocracies

Concrete Babydrone” by Federico Clapis.

One day, my daughter will ask me, “Dad, where do babies come from?”

And like a good father, I will explain to her, “Baby, sit down. It is time we have ‘the talk’.”

She looks expectantly at me while I remember the chronology of a story as old as time, and I tell her, “When a man loves a woman, they decide to go to Starbucks and get some Frappuccinos. They sit down and log into the free wifi. From there, they go to Amazon. They customize their baby and buy it with one click. Forty to forty-two weeks later, a drone will deliver the baby. If you have Prime, you might get a better deal — especially if you order the baby on Prime Day.”

I am privileged to live in an area where my daughter can watch the birds that hang out in our yard, including crows, blue jays, and black herons — which some people think are the actual birds people associate with conceptions. However, times change, and it is only logical that our myths and metaphors change with them, including the technological and business behemoths of our time.

Maybe these technological titans should hire a PR agency to design a campaign to instill them in the global consciousness as the “modern stork.”
