Writing to Silence My Fear of Death

If I leave this earth, tell my daughters where to find my writing

Looking for a musky scent
at the end of the tunnel
of a figure that wasn’t there.

Chasing his shadows
as he packed and unpacked his fears
searching for his peace.

Exhausted I stopped and controlled
the twitching of my legs and
their impulse to run after him.

Embracing
the convulsion of my stomach
and the emptiness of my heart.

Squeezing and grasping
pens and pencils
hoping they would give me advice.

Stroking the life
out of my keyboard
reaching for understanding.

And finally:

Resignation.

Acquiescence.

Surrender.

And then, the tunnel’s walls light up
to show a room
full of those cheering you on.
