Businesses ask me to join them for events as a keynote speaker. Some say I’m a motivational speaker, but I don’t feel motivational. I’ve just had a pretty poor time health wise and been fortunate enough to be able to keep going.

People often believe this is through strength or character. I disagree, I think it’s mainly through good fortune.

You do have to make the most of the cards you are dealt though. To use some poker phrases:

After talking about me and how my disability impacts me, I start to talk about my family. There are two main stories I tell and I will share one of them now.

My youngest daughter would have been four at the time. My skin was breaking down as part of an autoimmune response to what was happening to the rest of my body.

I was left with blisters, sores and open wounds over my body. It was very painful. They would open up just from moving.

It was conker season. A special time for me and my daughter. We have always collected hundreds of conkers each visit to the conker tree. She would take them home and keep her favourites, whilst the others would be hidden in our garden for the squirrels. (Who…
