A National Institute of Health (NIH)-funded mobile pharmacy van is taking to the streets of New Haven to provide clinical testing, prescriptions, and medical treatment to underserved communities — i.e. “healthcare for everyone.” The van, unveiled at a press conference at 789 Howard Ave. Wednesday morning, is the result of years of research and planning directed by Dr. Sandra Springer, a Yale School of Medicine professor and Yale New Haven Hospital infectious diseases specialist.

Yale Medicine (YM) and Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) recently introduced the first mobile retail pharmacy and clinic in Connecticut, bringing health care to people where they live. This project, known as InMOTION, serves communities throughout Connecticut, the first state in the nation to legalize mobile retail pharmacy services. InMOTION’s goal is to make better health accessible to anyone disconnected from the health care system for any reason. It is led by Sandra Springer, MD, professor of medicine (infectious diseases).

A recent study conducted by Yale researchers focused on the intersection of unhealthy alcohol use and adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. The research, undertaken between February 2019 and July 2020, involved semi-structured interviews with 15 men who have sex with men in Providence, Rhode Island and New Haven, Connecticut, who were prescribed PrEP and had screened positive for unhealthy alcohol use.
