Matter News wins two Cleveland Press Club awards

The dual-award-winning feature, written and reported in collaboration with Columbus Monthly, detailed the downfall of the corrupted Columbus police department Vice Unit.

Matter News earned a pair of awards at the statewide Excellence in Journalism awards over the weekend.

Presented by the Cleveland Press Club, the awards honored work done in 2023. Winners were announced during a ceremony at the House of Blues in Cleveland on Friday, June 7.

Matter’s awards included a second-place win in Investigative Journalism for “The Long Shadow of the Columbus Vice Unit.” Written and reported in collaboration with Columbus Monthly, the feature documented the disbandment of the corrupted police unit, which came under intense scrutiny in the wake of the 2018 arrest of adult film star Stormy Daniels.

“Beautifully written account of a lawless vice squad,” the judges wrote in their comments. “Fascinating from start to finish.”

Matter also took second place in Crime & Justice reporting for the collaboration, which you can read here.
