GROWING FOOD TOURISM IN NORTHERN ONTARIO

Ontario’s north makes up a large part of the province’s land area and almost one in every five businesses in the region is tourism-related. There is incredible potential to grow food tourism in Northern Ontario and the Culinary Tourism Alliance is thrilled to be working in partnership with Tourism Northern Ontario to develop food tourism strategies in the region.

Currently, the Culinary Tourism Alliance is working on projects with Algoma Kinniwabi Travel Association and the City of Greater Sudbury. Through our research so far, we have learned about the influence of immigration on the region’s foodways and the many natural assets that influence food and drink in Northern Ontario, such as its lakes, rivers, forests. We will further develop our research through two upcoming industry-based workshops in Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury in February.

FOOD FOCUS 2018
Researchers at the University of Guelph have released “Food Focus 2018”, a report that outlines six key food issues that we will be talking about in 2018. The research was a collaboration between the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, and the School of Hospitality, Food, and Tourism Management.

One finding that really stood out to us is "the rise of the restaurant." The report describes how Canadians are spending more and more of their food dollars in restaurants compared to grocery stores. As restaurants become a bigger focus for Canadians, there may be opportunities for food tourism operators to tap into this growing market.

Another interesting trend is "the rising popularity of alternative proteins," especially plant based proteins. With health and environmental concerns on the radar, many Canadians are reducing their meat consumption and seeking alternative forms of protein to supplement their diets.

EATING CHINESE: CULTURE ON THE MENU IN SMALL TOWN CANADA, LILY CHO
Destination Canada has announced that 2018 is the Canada-China Year of Tourism. This initiative is intended to create closer ties between Chinese and Canadian citizens (Source: Destination Canada).

In keeping with this announcement, the Grow Food Tourism team is exploring the Chinese foodways in Canada. We are currently reading Lily Cho’s “Eating Chinese: Culture on the Menu in Small Town Canada.” In Canada, it seems that every small town has a Chinese restaurant. We want to understand how this happened, learn about the Chinese diaspora, and what constitutes “Chinese-Canadian” cuisine. Here’s to celebrating the Canada-China Year of Tourism!
The Culinary Tourism Alliance is a non-profit, industry-led and industry-leading association. For the past decade, we have been developing world-class food tourism strategies, implementation plans, and experiential food tourism products, all while growing awareness about the power and potential of food tourism development.

We are on a mission to help build local and regional identities by working with strategic partners to support agriculture, viticulture and aquaculture businesses across the food tourism value chain. Culinary literally means “of or pertaining to the kitchen,” and Grow Food Tourism is our way of sharing what’s happening in the CTA kitchen.

Every quarter we’ll be sharing news, updates, tools and resources, with you, our partners in developing food tourism around the world.
