2  //  PROJECT UPDATE
CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES
Kawartha Lakes is made up of small rural communities located on rich farmland that are connected by rivers and lakes. Approximately a 1-hour drive from Canada’s largest city, Toronto, this destination is fast becoming a playground for adventure-minded urbanites as well as those who simply want to unplug. Whether you’re birding, house-boating, cycling, laying on the beach or hiking the trails, at some point your appetite will get the best of you.

The City of Kawartha Lakes wants to make sure you’re not only sufficiently suffonsified but also left with a food and drink memory that will keep you coming back, maybe permanently. With institutions like Kawartha Dairy, upcoming craft breweries, four farmers’ markets, and a significant number of farms and restaurants, some that are part of the Butter Tart Tour, Kawartha Lakes is well positioned to grow food tourism as a demand generator in the area. We are thrilled to be helping them do this. This project recently kicked off and we will be in-market this week, meeting with the project’s key stakeholder group, exploring the area, and attending both A Moveable Feast event at Fleming College and Kawartha Farmfest.

AIRBNB "EXPERIENCES"
Last year, Airbnb expanded its hospitality services to include “Experiences”, at least 300 of which involve food tourism. Visitors can pay for a variety of experiences that range from attending a paella workshop in a Barcelonan backyard to cruising between Sonoma vineyards in a vintage VW bus. Almost a year since the launch of Airbnb’s “Experiences”, the offerings have expanded from 12 cities to over 40.  These immersive, hand-on tourism experiences can offer travellers a “taste of place” and an opportunity to connect personally with the community they are visiting through the expertise of a local host. Airbnb recently announced a further expansion into the food tourism industry, through a new partnership with Resy, which will allow in-app restaurant reservations through Airbnb’s platform.
The Culinary Tourism Alliance is a non-profit, industry-led and industry-leading association. For the past decade, we have been developing world-class food tourism strategies, implementation plans, and experiential food tourism products, all while growing awareness about the power and potential of food tourism development.

We are on a mission to help build local and regional identities by working with strategic partners to support agriculture, viticulture and aquaculture businesses across the food tourism value chain. Culinary literally means “of or pertaining to the kitchen,” and Grow Food Tourism is our way of sharing what’s happening in the CTA kitchen.

Every quarter we’ll be sharing news, updates, tools and resources, with you, our partners in developing food tourism around the world.
