May 2023

Dean's Message
Students, faculty, and staff,

I am thrilled to send my heartfelt congratulations to our graduating class of 2023. Our students have achieved a tremendous milestone in your academic journey, and we look forward to celebrating them at our Division's upcoming commencement ceremony, on Wednesday, May 31, when each student enjoys a special moment of hearing their name called and walking across the stage.

In the spirit of celebration, I am delighted to invite everyone to the CUNY Jazz Fest, a signature event of City College's undergraduate and graduate jazz programs. This annual event is a beloved tradition featuring our own students and faculty, those of other CUNY colleges, and special guest artists. You can find more information on this below.

This time of year is full of news of awards, graduate school acceptances, and job placements. In our next issue, we'll share some of the places our graduates are headed after commencement. Whether you are graduating this year or are already an alum, please keep us posted on your accomplishments!

Sincerely,

Renata Kobetts Miller
Dean,
Division of Humanities and the Arts

Student News

Four Publishing Certificate Program (PCP) graduating seniors are beginning internships in the field.

Read on as they each share what excites them most about their new publishing positions.

Deana Denman (top left)
Penguin Random House — International Marketing and Sales Intern
The best part of my internship is the people I get to work with. Everyone is so supportive and knowledgeable. They give me so much advice and always connect me with people who can share their experiences in the industry. The work life balance here is great and of course another perk is…Free Books!

Robert Mixner (top right)
Cedar Grove Publishing — Editorial and Marketing Intern
The biggest highlight has been working closely with the publisher, Rochon Perry. Cedar Grove is a small press, which means that, although I'm working remotely, I have a lot of one-on-one communication with her, and I'm grateful for the information that she shares with me from her long experience in publishing. At the same time, I have a lot of latitude to handle tasks, especially when recommending manuscripts, so I'm able to develop my editorial skills on my own.

Sophia Chen (bottom left)
DropCap — Publishing Intern
I have contributed to the metadata preparation for the 2023 London Book Fair held in April! As I continue my internship at DropCap, I hope to contribute more to the weekly marketing meetings and their social media content. I look forward to being exposed to more foreign adaptations of books in various genres.

Cedar Ecker (bottom right)
Algonquin Books, Hachette Book Group USA — Editorial & Marketing Intern
Algonquin works on so many books highlighting amazing female authors from diverse backgrounds, I am really excited to work on projects uplifting those writers and helping the rest of the world get easy access to their amazing works. I'm also really looking forward to reading the initial submissions of some completely new and unknown writers just getting their start.

In addition, three PCP students have received the 2023 Bernard L. Mazel Publishing Opportunity Scholarship: Jenifer L. Nuñez, Genesis Cabral, and Daeli C. Vargas. Jenifer L. Nuñez and Elaine Vasquez are also the recipients of the Women’s Media Group (WMG) 2023 Fellowship, which offers a $3K stipend and access to media events and mentorships to two PCP students each year.

Maricela Niola (BA Theatre), Gary Hilborn (BFA Film), Susan Thorson (MFA Creative Writing), and Jennifer Garcia (BA Management & Admin)
Maricela Niola and Gary Hilborn won the Society of Professional Journalists Region 1 Mark of Excellence Awards for best online news video and best online feature feature.

Our online publication
Harlem View was a finalist in its category and congratulations go to its editors Susan Thorson and Jennifer Garcia. You can see the stiff competition here.
