Why would a Moroccan VC invest in diaspora founders? Pragmatism & comparative advantage. Here's how Omar El Hyani from the MITC Capital - Maroc Numeric Fund sees it: "I run one of Morocco’s “original” VCs. A few years ago, we expanded our investing mandate to include startups founded by Moroccans abroad. That may seem counter-intuitive: how is a Moroccan founder building a startup in and for a foreign market related to Morocco? What’s more, why would that founder raise from us? What good are we doing to the ecosystem if we invest in founders abroad? It boils down to pragmatism and comparative advantage. Pragmatism because we are a VC fund and we are looking to deliver returns. By widening our deal-flow scope, we get to include founders operating in “richer” markets where potential returns are larger. Since us and the founder(s) are Moroccan, cultural affinity eases collaboration. We also gain exposure to new geographies, investing in the UAE, Canada, Senegal and even France. Comparative advantage for two reasons. First, because we connect our Moroccan founders abroad to tech talent in Morocco. This is a win-win situation: founders get access to affordable talent that they implicitly connect with, and the Moroccan ecosystem exposes its talent to startups abroad. Second, because Moroccan founders who want to expand to Africa now have a relevant partner on the ground." Strengthening the US-Morocco Free Trade Agreement 🇲🇦 🇺🇸 The eighth session of the joint committee overseeing the US-Morocco Free Trade Agreement, recently held in Washington, highlighted the determination of both countries to strengthen their commercial partnership. This agreement, in effect since 2006, has significantly increased bilateral trade. In 2023, American exports to Morocco reached $3.496 billion, while Moroccan exports to the United States reached $1.6 billion, reflecting a substantial increase since the agreement's inception. Recent discussions focused on several key sectors, including agriculture, textiles, automotive, and investments. Morocco, represented by Ryad Mezzour, Minister of Industry and Trade, reiterated its strategic role as an economic partner and its commitment to facilitating market access for American companies. Bryant Trick, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, emphasized the importance of this agreement in supporting ongoing economic and political reforms in Morocco, as well as enhancing commercial opportunities for American exports. One of the priorities discussed was the improvement of customs cooperation and the elimination of technical trade barriers, along with the implementation of sanitary and phytosanitary measures to facilitate agricultural trade. The 2024 trade report also highlighted persistent barriers and called for reforms to maximize the benefits of the commercial partnership. This partnership, which continues to strengthen, plays a crucial role in supporting economic growth and regional stability, with the United States designating Morocco as a major non-NATO ally in 2004. Both countries work closely on security, sustainable development, and counterterrorism, consolidating their historic bilateral relations. it was an incredible privilege and honor to moderate the workshop "Human-centered Solutions in a Resilient/Sustainable Smart City" at the Africa Smart City Forum 2024, Morocco. The distinguished panelists are well known practioners and think tanks, representing Africa, Europe and Asia. The importance of "human" at the center focus in building resilient and smart cities still lagging a focus. The following takeaways would truly shape our thoughts to make the cities resilient and smart: - Human needs at the center of innovation; - Cities and its peripheries, and rural areas must be looked through the lense of territorial resilience; otherwise they merely fall into discrete spatial entities without the interdependencies; - Territorial resilient strategies would pave the pathway for smart territories; - A directed education is needed to the use of smart technologies in favor of positive outcomes for the community well-being; - Efficacy of community participation is critical, not by the number, but with a true representation of the communities & stakeholders across the territories; - Indigenous knowledge or local ingenuity is crucial in shaping the technologies geared towards solving context specific challenges - both contemporary and emerging.
