About us
The VIOBOND consortium aims to take significant commercialization steps based on the natural wood component lignin, creating industrial technologies for a significant reduction of the share of fossil raw materials in phenol formaldehyde resin, which is currently widely used in various everyday products. The first-of-its-kind flagship plant producing industrial-scale lignin phenol-formaldehyde (LPF) resins will be built in Latvia within the scope of VIOBOND project in the next 5 years. Production capacity of environmentally friendly resin will reach 45,000 tons per year and renewable lignin will replace more than third part of fossil materials used traditionally. Consortium members will use new resin for plywood manufacture and coating, sandpaper adhesive and glass wool thermal insulation binder. The project is co-financed by Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking and consortium members – Latvijas Finieris (Latvia), Graanul Biotech (Estonia), ST1 (Finland), Chempolis (Finland), Saint-Gobain Finland (Finland), Mirka (Finland), Pörner Ingenieurgesellschaft (Germany & Austria), Fundacio Universitaria Balmes (Spain), Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (Latvia).

Plywood glued with lignin withstood a water resistance test. A sample was submerged for 7 days. The lignin-based glue held firm. @Raimo Pullola, thank your brother for the experiment! #Chempolis #lignin #plywood #innovation #VIOBOND
Lisätestauksia ligniinipohjaisen liiman käytöstä vanerin liimauksessa Vanerin liimauksessa on käytetty Chempoliksella tuotetusta ligniinistä jalostettua liimaa. Liimauskokeen on tehnyt Latvijas Finieris AS Viobond-projektin yhteydessä.

Ligniinipohjaisella liimalla liimatun vanerin testaus. Kiitokset Hytösen Keijolle, että sain 18 mm paksua vanerilevyä askartelujani varten. Vanerin liimauksessa on käytetty Chempoliksella tuotetusta ligniinistä jalostettua liimaa. Liimauskokeen on tehnyt Latvijas Finieris AS Viobond-projektin yhteydessä.
