Asteroid Day is a United Nations recognised event held annually on 30 June, as an official day in the UN calendar. It is a programme of the Luxembourg-based Asteroid Foundation which aims to inspire a local and global audience about space science and businesses, space exploration and missions, the role of asteroids in the formation of our solar system, the protection of our planet and the responsible and sustainable use of resources in space and on Earth. [What an] Asteroid Day! It has truly been a pleasure to moderate the session on data sonification in space with inspiring - actually mind-blowing - Wanda Diaz-Merced, a Puerto-Rican astronomer who found a way to listen to the stars, after turning blind by the age of 20; and with the co-founders of Loud Numbers, Miriam Quick & Duncan Geere who talked about data sonification as a tool of communication with the public - check out their Loud Numbers podcasts to get a feel for what they are doing. One important message by Wanda Diaz-Merced, which resonated with me is the need to promote a STEAM approach to learning, to inquiry and to critical thinking rather than drawing an artificial line between Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics on one hand, and Arts on the other. Asteroid Day 2024 was also an opportunity to catch up with some of the participants of last year's edition - caro Gianluca Masi sempre un piacere - as well as individuals with whom I've had the pleasure to do projects in the past such as Djamila Aouada and Eric Tschirhart. Less than 24 hours ago, potentially hazardous asteroid 2024 MK had a very close encounter with our home planet, a few days after its discovery. This 200-meters large object came as close as 300.000 km, 77% of the average lunar distance, becoming one of the brightest objects of its kind seen in recent history. A few hours ago, once 2024 MK moved into the Northern sky and being in Luxembourg to celebrate Asteroid Day 2024 here, I managed to capture this spectacular image. I remotely connected to one of my robotic telescopes part of The Virtual Telescope Project facility in Tuscany, Italy, asking it to track at the fast motion of the object, which turned out as a perfect, bright dot of light, while stars on the background are leaving long trails. At the imaging time, 2024 MK was already on its way back, at more than 400.000 km, beyond the lunar orbit. I have some further footage to work on, will share it here once ready. While I was doing the above, I shared the experience live, online, with more than five thousand viewers from all around the planet. This adds to the outstanding experience I had two nights earlier, when I showed potentially hazardous asteroid 2011 UL21 to almost one-hundred thousand viewers, celebrating that way Asteroid Day with me. 🚀 Kickoff of the Asteroid Day Events in Luxembourg! Madame Julie Payette, the 29th Governor General of Canada and Astronaut, met with more than 200 students from Lycée Technique du Centre. After an introduction by the school's director, Mohammad, and Kinji, Astronauts for a Day, shared their adventures as ambassadors of the Luxembourg Space Agency. Following this, Madame Julie Payette captivated the audience with a presentation about her journey from childhood dreams to her space missions.
