New Music USA envisions a thriving and equitable ecosystem for new music throughout the United States.

About us

New Music USA supports the sounds of tomorrow by nurturing the creation, performance, and appreciation of new music for adventurous listeners around the world. We empower and connect US-based music makers, organizations, and audiences by providing funding through our Project Grants, fostering new connections through our programs, deepening knowledge through our online magazine NewMusicBox, and working as an advocate for the field. New Music USA works in collaboration with its community in response to pressing needs and to amplify the diverse voices of music creators; we envision a thriving and equitable ecosystem for new music throughout the United States. New Music USA is the recipient of the 2020 Gold Baton Award from the League of American Orchestras, which has been given annually since 1948 for distinguished service to America’s orchestras. As we go about our work, we make a point of not defining too precisely what we mean by new music. We simply want all music that’s not commercially viable to flourish through its originality and diverse forms of expression. We also believe that it’s a spectacular time for creativity and collaboration and we are keen for the work we support to reflect the talent of creators and practitioners from all backgrounds and from every part of the United States.

We’re excited to introduce our new Grantee of the Month series, where we spotlight our talented grantees, their work, and the music that inspires them.✨ Our first Grantee of the Month is Vicki Leona Nguyen (Creator Fund 2024)! Based in NYC, Nguyen is a Vietnamese-American composer, performer, and multi-media artist. Her work explores the psycho-social - or rather the intangible relationships - between all of us, both within and outside of the bounds of music.  Watch this video to learn more about Vicki and her New Music USA-funded project, “Ginger Flavored Bubblegum”, which explores the multiplicity and transcendence of grief through poet, filmmaker, and artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's seminal and last published work, "Dictee." 🎧 Vicki also curated a wonderful playlist for us that includes some of her favorite music right now. Check it out on Spotify or YouTube!  • Spotify: https://lnkd.in/gwEJ8aVg • YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gEwYFMQf 🔊: Vicki Leona Nguyen’s “M O V E”

Opportunity alerts! 🚨 Applications are now open for The Greater Vancouver International Film Festival Society's Amp Music Composer Filmmaker Accelerator (CFA) program, a hands-on learning program for emerging composers of music for media, and their 2024 Music in Media Summit, which explores every aspect of music in visual media, from composition to song placement for film, television, advertising and video games. The Composer Filmmaker Accelerator was created to advance the dialogue and collaboration between composers and filmmakers, giving 12 talented, emerging film composers and 4 filmmakers an opportunity to take their careers to the next level by recording and performing their original score with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, with world-class mentorship from Emmy-award-winning composer, Miriam Cutler. The Amp Music in Media Summit will take place in Vancouver from Sept 30th - Oct 5th, 2024, where 60 selected applicants will be given free entry. The program is designed to develop skills and create connections that can excel a career in film and television, with a focus on providing access to artists from traditionally marginalized communities. • Applications for both programs close July 19th • Eligibility & applications: https://viff.org/amp/

Our New Music Inc cohort in Baltimore recently gathered virtually for a learning session led by Lisa Bleich about leadership and organization tactics! 🤝 These monthly cohort learning sessions are a key facet of New Music Inc, our Baltimore, Chicago, and New York-based incubator program that emphasizes hands-on skill-building for small, artist-led organizations in addition to offering financial support. During the session, the group engaged in an interactive conversation identifying common leadership challenges and strategies toward institutional sustainability. Lisa Bleich has built her 25-year career on two core beliefs: authentic, empathetic communication creates strong communities, and with the right support, people can solve their own challenges. A native Baltimorean, Lisa's work spans mediation, community organizing, and leadership across education, community health, and public sectors. Thank you, Lisa, for sharing your expertise with our grantees! #WeAreNewMusic

Thank you, Jessica Duchen, for this important article, reminding us that a woman is still more likely to lead a G7 country than a major American orchestra. This is why New Music USA is honored to work with Marin Alsop and her Breaking Barriers Festival later this month to connect women composers with Taki-Alsop conductors. I agree that there's still a long way to go and that now more than ever, we need to keep pushing for a world in which half the population is not "a minority concern." #genderequity #womeninmusic #inclusion #leadership

'One audience member told me I should be in the kitchen, making children'. Why are there still so few female conductors?

We are thrilled to celebrate a major milestone for Reel Change awardee Nikhil Koparkar’s funded film project, Dead Whisper! The film will debut in select theaters on July 5th, and on Apple TV and Prime Video beginning July 9th. Congrats to Nikhil Koparkar on scoring the film, Conor Soucy on directing it, and all other folks involved in its success! 👏 Read the Variety article: https://lnkd.in/eiEWAjBa #WeAreNewMusic 🎥: Courtesy of Conor Soucy
