Productivity, Biomass, and Population Dynamics in Amazonian Water Bodies

Tropical Ecological Systems

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 11))

Abstract

The rain forest area of Amazonia, although topographically and climatically only slightly differentiated, is inhomogeneous in its ecological structure. According to its geological makeup it is divided into several regions that are defined geochemically and can be characterized ecologically (Fittkau, 1969, 1970, 1971). The running waters are useful indicators of the geochemical character of the Amazonian forest landscapes because their water chemistry reflects the availability of nutrients in the soils (Sioli, 1954a, 1954b, 1957).
