The growing role for neurology in neuro-oncology

Neuro-oncology should not be confined to specialized units. A knowledge on cancer related to neuro-oncology should be omnipresent in general neurology and also in our daily interdisciplinary network. Neuro oncology is not confined to primary brain tumors, but is important in the management of cancer patients. The rationale for this topical collection is that not only cancer increases, but also new therapies need careful monitoring of neurological side effects. Because of modern therapies the number of long term survivors increase, which may also change the natural history of some cancers and increase late effects. The aim of this topical collection is to: highlight the essential role of neurology in the diagnosis of cancer and detection and treatment of complications; draw attention to the many neurological aspects related to cancer; provide the reader with an overview on the treatment options, their upsides, their limitations and the possible future innovations in this increasingly changing field; improve awareness of these frequent cancer related conditions; provide with an update on state of the art of cancer pain. Topics which may be considered for this collection include: epidemiology and distribution, examples for direct cancer effects, and indirect cancer effects as paraneoplastic and treatment related issues, palliative care and cancer pain. In particular, we are currently seeking for articles focusing on the state of the art of cancer pain supported by evidence based studies, investigation on the patient view of cancer pain, and also late and terminal pain intervention in palliative and end of life settings . Although pain is a subjective symptom, several tools of assessment exist. The treatment of cancer pain is usually drug based, but also interventions as surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, among others. Cancer pain may also need special clinics, and include other medical specialties as physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
