Abstract
Schizophrenia is a chronic psychological disorder; its diagnosis can be described as life changing for some individuals. Schizophrenia has a profound impact on different facets of an individual’s life, especially marital life. Marriage is a social construct. It is a state of being coalesced as spouses in a contractual and accordant relationship by law. Marriage requires an interaction between many components to achieve marital satisfaction. This chapter aims to explore how schizophrenia can affect one’s marital satisfaction and how marriage can affect any individual diagnosed with schizophrenia. The chapter also aims to understand the relationship shared between spouses and parent–child dynamic with the parent being diagnosed with schizophrenia. The highlight of this chapter is that we try to understand marital satisfaction in individuals with schizophrenia through the perspective of Sternberg’s triangular theory of love. The theory discusses relationships through the help of 3 aspects: intimacy, passion, and commitment. It is important that we understand the state of marital satisfaction amongst individuals with schizophrenia so that we can not only identify the factors involved in influencing marital satisfaction but can also develop appropriate intervention strategies to enhance and improve marital satisfaction amongst individuals with schizophrenia.
