Abstract

In a large number of meteorites the cosmic-ray-produced nuclides 53Mn and 26A1 were measured by intense neutron bombardment or by ‘low-level’ γ-coincidence techniques. The former method, especially, has proved to be very sensitive and economical with regard to the consumption of valuable meteorite material, as the sample weight is only about 1 g. The long-lived K emitter 53Mn is transformed by neutron capture into 54Mn, which is detected by its 0.84-MeV γ-rays. Values in the range of 50 to 600 dpm/kg were commonly found in iron meteorites. The technique is very specific and practically unaffected by the (n, p) and (n, 2n) side reactions. Conclusions on ‘exposure ages’ of individual stone meteorites were drawn by comparing our results with others based on rare-gas contents. The fact that 53Mn should also be present in extraterrestrial cosmic dust led us to search for this radionuclide in deep-sea sediments, in order to get data on the cosmic-dust influx rate.

The neutron-produced 60Co was also measured in 3 recently fallen meteorites. For Sikhote-Alin an estimate was made with regard to the pre-atmospheric shielding. Moreover, a systematic search for the trace-element composition of iron meteorites was carried out simultaneously, especially for Mn, Co, Cu and Re, Os, Ir. Emphasis was laid on a non-destructive analysis. In measuring 64Cu by its 180°-angular correlation of the e+-annihilation γ-quanta, an increase in selectivity by about a factor of 103 was achieved, as compared to conventional coincidence techniques. For the element pairs Ir/Os and Os/Re a noticeable correlation is found, but not for the other pair combinations.
