Abstract
For over 2000 years, research has been underway to track down the scent. Meanwhile, brain research or neuroperfumery knows of three olfactory feedback loops in the brain and two types of sensory perception that influence smelling, perfume and effect. We will also discuss how findings from neuroperfumery combined with AI are currently ushering in the future of perfumery and increasingly enabling a new category of perfumes: active fragrances or neuroscents. The big keyword here is “mood & health modulation”. This development certainly also carries risks that the legislator must keep in mind. The key question is therefore: How strong can perfumes actually work? However, through neuroperfumery, one also comes to more and more findings about what makes certain scents so special, for example citrus notes, and why one can become “addicted” to them. They have a sophisticated broadband effect on the neocortex and stimulate in many ways. This type of multiple brain stimulation provides suggestions for the research and application of fragrance molecules and thus also for the future of smelling and perfumery. Based on current findings from neuroperfumery, I will give tips for fragrance consulting at the end of the chapter: how to inspire the brain for a new perfume or how to give it a little help.
