Abstract

Even if you don’t have the intention of becoming a perfumer or working in the fascinating but also very strategically oriented perfume industry and, for example, successfully launching your own perfume on the market, this chapter shares a lot of current insider information from the perfume industry and trade with the reader, which should be quite exciting for everyone who uses perfumes. In particular, how calculations are made in the industry, what conditions and margins are concerned, and what one has to be prepared for in negotiations with industry and trade, is a well-kept secret. Specifically, this chapter is about five major topics: the market dominance of the large perfume manufacturers and the consequences this has; how a new perfume is calculated in industry and trade; the areas of perfumery: fine perfumery, functional perfumery, and aromatherapy; the situation of the perfume specialist trade; you as a perfumer and the opportunities you have in this profession.
