Trauma and Trauma Consequence Disorder

Abstract

A trauma is defined according to ICD-10 as “a short- or long-term event or occurrence of exceptional threat with catastrophic magnitude, which would trigger profound despair in almost everyone.” A classification of trauma can take place from different points of view. On the one hand according to frequency (Type-I trauma vs. Type-II trauma), on the other hand according to the causing instance (non-intentional vs. intentional trauma). The diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a clearly defined disease by its symptoms, but it has different criteria in the different classification systems. The “complex” PTSD represents a disorder that goes beyond PTSD. However, there is no uniform definition and classification with diagnostic criteria yet.
