Abstract

Advanced Emergency Ultrasound (AEMUS) is a young field developed to improve patient care through advancing, educating, and overseeing point-of-care ultrasound performed by emergency physicians. This chapter reviews the history and current scope of point-of-care ultrasound in Emergency Medicine, common reasons for pursuing fellowship training in ultrasound, what to expect in fellowship, and how to prepare oneself for fellowship. Advanced emergency ultrasound fellowship typically comprises one year of fellowship training following completion of an Emergency Medicine residency. In addition to honing technical skills and exploring advanced applications, fellowship training focuses on developing one’s capabilities as an educator, leader, and researcher in ultrasound. Those considering fellowship should develop a strong foundation of core ultrasound skills during residency as well as seek out opportunities to participate in medical student or resident ultrasound education. To apply for fellowship, you will need to join the Society for Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships and submit an application including letters of recommendation and a personal statement.
