International Dissemination of Behavior Analysis

Disseminating Behavioral Research

Abstract

This chapter on the international dissemination of behavior analysis highlights the heterogenous nature of the international context and the importance of thinking beyond the standard academic means of dissemination—peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. There are many barriers to international dissemination: the lack of scientific communication with other disciplines; the limited access to postgraduate training programs worldwide; the absence of the translation of key texts and journals that limits the breadth and depth of training for non-English speaking populations; the prevailing wave of misinformation, mistrust, and hostility directed towards those working with individuals with autism; the limited professional emphasis with many behavior analysts working with individuals with autism and developmental disabilities; the fact that dissemination skills are separate from the taught skills and competences acquired during most postgraduate training programs and are rarely explicitly taught. Some of these barriers are generic but are more difficult to surmount in countries, regions, and cultures that are yet to recognize and value the field. Some solutions and suggestions are provided for addressing these issues.
